Li Cheng-chieh trudges through the muddy tidal flats of his oyster farm in Fangyuan in Western Taiwan, as he mutters, “腰痠背痛” (lower back pain), in between beetle nut chews. Li’s family for generations have been harvesting oysters and selling them to jokes and local markets. Four years ago, thick cables to transmit power from a new offshore wind project landed ashore, and workers dug trenches to bury them, churning up layers of sediment and debris that slowly killed nearly all their oysters.
.
“I often say I will be the last generation of oyster farmers here.”

Taiwan is a major source of an often invisible component of everyday objects: screws. Taiwan has long been the top provider of screws to the United States. But its factories are struggling to survive under Trump’s 50 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum.
.
In my latest work for @nytimes with @megatobin & @xin_yun_wu , we traveled to the heart of the screw industry, Lujhu and Gangshan in southern Taiwan, where factories are going out of business, some fighting for survival, and others holding steadfast.
.
Big thanks to @reneemelides for bringing me on this and @shawnpaiknyt for the great video edit!

“Inside the Fast and Furious world of pigeon racing in Taiwan”, new work for @guardian , with @heldavidson and Jason Tzu Kuan Lu.
.
We ventured deep into the country side of Taiwan to meet Pigeon racers gearing up for a summer sea race in Pingtung. We learned of the at the wild kidnapping stories, pigeon cuckolding, and a winner takes all pigeon racing culture in Taiwan.
.
So happy to work with @heldavidson on another one, and happy to continue our collaborations on stories of what senior citizens in Taiwan like to do.
