It’s hard to believe we’re already close to completing one year of being open! It feels like just yesterday that we opened Another World with a dream: to be a space for neighbors to experience community, nourishment, joy, and people power. We’re entering year two with even bigger dreams, so mark your calendars for our one-yeah anniversary party and fundraiser on May 30, ft. some fire fish fry 🐟🎉
Leading up to that, we have our usual, packed lineup of events, centered on healthcare for the people, movie and poetry nights, communal childcare; tenant rights, abolitionist study and more 🌱🩻
🚨 DATE & LOCATION CHANGE: @no4apartheid is now on 5/31 at 3 PM meeting in Herbert Von King Park (NOT Another World)!
And you can always drop by anytime during our open hours, from Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 8pm, to relax, mingle, work, and meet your neighbors! 🩵
June Balloon was a neighborhood festival for kids in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in the 80s and 90s. When it ended in 2001, Crown Heights was on the verge of a period of rapid gentrification and increased policing; today, many long-time residents are fighting for their right to stay in the neighborhood they grew up in and raise a new generation. We need to build community more than ever, in the face of rising fascism, and the children are our future.
The Crown Heights CARE Collective and Another World, with the help of our local block associations and grassroots community groups, plan to bring back June Balloon this summer 2026. Follow us on this journey and watch our full June Balloon video on YouTube (link in bio).
And if YOU or your neighbors want to get involved, please join us at 629 Nostrand every Saturday at 11:15 am for our June Balloon planning meetings ✨💗
Extra extra: the latest edition of the People's Torch is out - get your copy at Another World! In this edition, an op-ed about the necessity of abolishing SRG, a report back from the Nuestra America Convoy to Cuba, and more

Time for another Crown Heights poetry night! In her essay Poetry Is Not A Luxury, Audre Lorde writes, “Poetry is the way we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought. The farthest external horizons of our hopes and fears are cobbled by our poems, carved from the rock experiences of our daily lives.” Sign up at Another World on Friday May 15th, 7pm to expand our collective horizons by sharing an original poem, or amplifying one you love.

Next Wednesday (5/13) join PSWG-NYC and Jakhi McCray's Support Committee for a screening of Michelangelo Antonioni's "Zabriskie Point", a counterculture cult classic... The story of a student activist turned cop killer on the run and an anthropology student traveling across Death Valley, California, set during the height of the anti-war movement in the 60s.
After the screening, we'll reflect on abolition and activism on campus, the relation between student organizing, the broader movement, and our communities, and the question of individualism versus collective action.

We’re making a big community mural at June Balloon 2026!!! 🎈 🎨
Join us on Saturday, May 16, from 12:30-2:30pm at @anotherworldbk for a workshop to brainstorm and create the design for the mural as a community. Bring memories and pictures of June Balloons past, as well as stories about your block: what makes it special? what are some hidden histories people don’t know about?
@brooklynemac will lead the workshop and create a design based on community input, with paint-by-numbers panels. At June Balloon, on June 20, attendees can color in the mural (materials will be provided) and produce an amazing piece of collective artwork :)
See you there!
