I’ve seen where a few people think lifeguards should make sure people get out of the water if there are sharks anywhere nearby but I don’t think those people understand just how many sharks there are through the summer along the gulf. Especially in Pensacola. And I don’t say that as a fear tactic, but a fact that can ease your mind a little honestly. For months EVERY year there can be up to 15+ sharks not crazy far from the shore but you would never know it without a drone, flying above, or walking the pier. Thing is, you aren’t on the menu and they don’t really want to be around you.
Obviously this doesn’t speak for every shark *cough “bull sharks”, but not every shark wants to bite you like the media can try to make it out to be. It isn’t unusual that we have as many sharks out as we do now either! It’s a yearly thing which I still find absolutely incredible that they just chill at the same beach each year.
So don’t listen to the people trying to get all the likes and views because they say “there are an unusual amount of sharks in the area.” They most likely have no clue what they are talking about as the sharks come in like clockwork each year just like the cownose rays, just like the devil rays, just like the sea nettles, moon jellies, etc. Nature W I L D L Y moves on time each year.
Anyways, don’t freak out, but also don’t be dumb. Don’t think no shark will ever bite you. You don’t need to be too far out where they could be feeding, you don’t need to be alone too far out as most stay near the second sand bar or between the first and second, don’t be near people fishing, don’t be flailing as they could think you were hurt and an easy catch etc. A shark bite could always happen but the likelihood is not what the media portrays it to be. Yes, they can happen with you doing absolutely nothing wrong or enticing to them due to a curious shark or one that’s really hungry or they are a bull shark with no standards, but again, the likelihood is still incredibly small. You’re more likely to get struck by lightning even.
Note: Did three edits so they would be pretty easy to spot! They are blacktips and sometimes spinners in the mix!
