What we have here is a dog who’s realized he can look through the kitchen window to tell if someone might be about to drop an entire steak on the floor
This weekend!! If you’re going to @ravencon , this is where you can definitely catch me.
If I’d known there was a chance I would be moderating a panel at 11pm, would I have made the same life choices? Maybe not!!!! But here we are, and there I shall be, come say hi 🖤
Proof of life: in limbo on several things, and despite It All, working on a new book! Remember all those bodies hidden in abandoned row houses in The Wire? Me too…
2025 in bread: sourdough, sandwich, baguettes, knotted rolls, challah.
From Seattle to temporary housing to new home in Richmond; from before and during a total shift in how I spend my time and energy; none taken with particular care for framing because I am, alas, over that kind of thing if I was ever into it 😅
Here’s to a 2026 with a lot less time on or thinking about social media, a lot more time writing and reading, and a lot more bread shared with people who like to eat it!
A few books I’ve drawn various pieces of inspiration from recently, and that are just generally good for the season!
1. Killer on the Road by Stephen Graham Jones - breakneck pace, a fun and funky mythology that isn’t over-explained, brutal kills but lovable characters
2. The Witching Hour by Anne Rice - only a hundred pages into this tome but I’m really enjoying the lush atmosphere and character work; reading vintage Anne Rice always feels like time traveling in the best way
3. Where I End by Sophie White - no mother-daughter relationship has ever been as hard to read and as impossible to look away from as this… some real trigger warnings with this one
4. The Needfire by @mkhardywrites - haunting and gothic with a stunning setting and a central romance that’s both tender and believably fraught
These days, when not writing or working, it turns out I revert to my country roots pretty dramatically (the double suet is just to make sure this will hold…!)
Brief end of summer check in! Since July we moved into a new house, nature abounds, I’ve drafted a script and a novella, we went all up the joint, explored new cities with friends new and old, and spent a good amount of time just sitting around. Excited for fall and various secret things to pick up their pace 👀👀👀
Of course I would finally live somewhere with a library after getting rid of a ton of books… but, now there’s a free pass to buy books at every store in every city we go anywhere near!
Stopped by the new @fountainbookstore spot today by accident (we caught them literally putting the closed sign on the old location) and spotted a few familiar spines in the Horror section… I would have done the full search for my fantasy and romance buds if we weren’t due for a grocery shop but if you’re in or near RVA, definitely come through! They’re so well curated and lovely.
Also our buys today show a bit of the household taste 😅 and, I read REKT as an ebook and wanted to be able to inflict it on others more easily so picked up a hardcover too 😈 enjoy the glimpse at both our nascent library and our very well developed garbage piles
Quick break from moving to be thrilled and honored by this mention from Alex Brown in @reactorsff ! I love this story and am so glad it’s unnerving people other than me 🖤
