This song got me right in the guts from the first time I heard it. To me, it is a reminder that we are all vibrant, earthly creatures, connected and sharing the baffling/scary/amazing experience of life (however much we like to pretend that we are not animals, like every other resident here). We place barriers between one another based on completely arbitrary 'differences' like skin colour, sexual attraction, gender identity, appearance, physical ability, the wiring of our brains, material wealth, none of which actually change the fact that we are all human.
For this performance, I interpreted the song as a conversation between my current adult self and the confused and wounded child within. Affirming to younger me that I was never a problem, people just didn't know what to do with me 😂 You are never alone if you are your own best friend 🫂
This is my favourite performance I have ever done. I have spoken before about my extremely difficult relationship with performing 😂 I usually add humour to my performances because I'm too afraid to take it seriously in case I look ridiculous. At least if I joke then I'm laughing too.
This time I decided I was going to just be as weird as I liked and sure if people didn't get it then at least I was true to myself. Who knew leading with authenticity would actually result in the audience connecting MORE?? Wild!

Final illustration of my “Mermaid Annie” (@anniequeeries 🩵❤️) - Got this one printed on a A2 size paper and framed as a bday gift to her. All the elements are drawings by hand pencil on paper and then I scan the illustration and digitally paint them with a wacom tablet, just like real paint but less messy, and able to pay attention to little details. Love the process for artworks like this.
