DJ Kenny Mac (originally from Glasgow) joined me today, both of us longtime Northern Soul fans who found our way into the scene through Motown, Stax etc back in our early teens. Who remembers the Kent albums?
Ken has DJ’d all over the world and has built one of the most impressive collections of rare Northern Soul records I’ve come across. Chances are our paths have crossed before as we’ve been moving through the same circles for years.
Northern Soul emerged in Northern England in the early 1970s, built by DJs and dancers around fast, high-energy American soul records, often rare, often overlooked at the time. A lot of incredible tracks that never found mainstream success ended up becoming dancefloor classics in this scene.

Connemara Community Radio broadcasts to their Letterfrack community and to Inishbofin. They have 50 or so volunteers powering their station with very dedicated managers/volunteers like Gráinne and Colette. Colette gave us a tour and history of the station. How familiar it all felt. The same spirit from DJs/volunteers, the same challenges and the same gratitude.
