Now, at last, the cult of the war has caught up with him. Putin knows he can’t live up to the mythology he created, and everyone else can see that too. Link in bio.

On 13 May, historian and author @anneapplebaum2000 took the stage at Vienna's Judenplatz to deliver this year's Speech to Europe, »The European Moment«. In a world where the EU's achievements are too easily dismissed as bureaucratic inconvenience, and where both Russia and the United States are working to weaken European unity, Applebaum made the case for Europe to recognise its own weight and act accordingly. Since 2019, »A Speech to Europe«, initiated by ERSTE Foundation to mark Europe Day, has offered a moment of reflection on Europe's past, present, and future. Judenplatz, steeped in layers of European history, is no coincidental stage. 🔗 Click the link in bio to read the full speech in our journal. A joint event by @wienerfestwochen , ERSTE Foundation and the Institute for Human Sciences (@iwm_vienna ), in cooperation with @jewishmuseumvienna 📷: @malt5eva

“What’s happened to me in the last decade, is that I’ve discovered that a lot of what I thought was over and done, and belonged to some other era, has come back. Most people think democracies end with a coup d’état, or you know, tanks in the street, or somebody shooting up the presidential palace, but actually, in the modern world, they mostly end because someone who is legitimately elected begins to take apart the system and take away the things that ensure free elections can continue.” Staff writer Anne Applebaum joined Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO for a wide-ranging conversation on the rise of authoritarian systems and her reporting for The Atlantic. "Rarely, if ever, is anyone given a diplomatic posting directly following such a spectacular failure, especially one that did so much damage to American interests around the world." Link in bio.

Four years ago, President Vladimir Putin offered Moscow and its business elite a de facto deal: ‚support my war in Ukraine, and in exchange you won’t have to think about it.’ In the past week, that deal was broken. Link in bio.
