Residency on Governors Island starts THIS SATURDAY 5/2!!! I will be at the @artcrawlharlem house every weekend (except May 30-31) Open to the public May 16-July 12
403 Colonels Row
Saturdays + Sundays
11am - 5pm
Come visit and maybe even pull up a chair and join me as I sew a large scale cityscape. I am delighted to be among a creative cohort of artists. #Artcrawlharlem #governorsisland
ArtCrawl Harlem welcomes back @anncofta as a 2026 Artist in Residence on Governors Island.
Ann plans to facilitate the creation of a community based, interactive, fabric cityscape quilt. The flat 2-D work will measure approximately 5 feet by 3 feet and be made up of smaller pieces sewn together. The border and edges will be created prior to the start of the residency. The remainder will be filled in and completed during the 2 ½ months on Governors Island by me and by visitors to the ArtCrawl Harlem house. It will be like a jigsaw puzzle, where the edge pieces are all connected first and subsequant pieces are added from the outside to the middle. The fabrics will be precut squares and rectangles so that they can easily fit together. The cityscape imagery will be based on urban structures that she will design and sew. The entire work will be placed on top of a large table allowing access from all sides. Visitors will be invited to join this sewing “circle”, with everyone welcome to sit at the table. Participants can select and add parts of the sky to the piece. The purpose of the project is to create a space that is inclusive. Others are invited into the art making process with Ann. People will be sitting together and putting their energy into a creative endeavor, literally building something new. They will be talking with people they wouldn’t normally interact with. It is in these places that people connect, share stories and build community.

Working on studies for several large scale textile pieces. Using this adorable mini paint set and sketch book, a fun gift from @cpfowlerphotography !
In case it doesn’t look familiar, this is a typewriter eraser. I’m planing on making a few to go with my large typewriters (swipe to see typewriter image and photo of an actual eraser).

First finished artwork of the new year! It’s a bit of a throwback on multiple levels. I typically worked this small years ago, before I had a studio. The size of my recent art varies now, but the tiny works are often an homage to retro objects (if you scroll through old IG posts, you’ll discover little typewriters and more). These pieces are small, requiring significant time as layers of wool felt and seed beads are hand stitched together.
It turns out the Brits have some fun names for telephones, including bell, blower, dog and bone, tinkle, horn and Alexander. Who knew?
Wishing everyone a healthy new year as we bravely face each day.
