Fundamentally Funder and the foundations of our humanity. “I have spent my working life trying to understand the world by writing about it, creating works of literature designed to inform, to bear witness and to delight. Often, these have been true stories of ordinary people, dealing with an overwhelming world. “In our time of information surfeit on the one hand, and fake news on the other, literature fosters deep human understanding and knowledge. It feeds the human spirit, and it connects us across difference. “I could not be more delighted to be joining VC Mark Scott and the extraordinarily gifted and dedicated colleagues at the University of Sydney. I am enormously grateful for the breadth of vision of this appointment. I am looking forward to contributing to the university’s research, scholarship and public engagement missions, and to working with the other creative writers and thinkers across the humanities at the University.” - @annafunderauthor joins the @sydney_uni Award-winning author of Wifedom, Stasiland and All That I Am, appointed Professor of Practice in Creative Writing in the School of Art, Communication and English.

Come and hear Anna tell the stories behind the books: of people who climbed over the Berlin Wall, tunnelled under it, or helped build it. How did she get the ex-Stasi to come out of hiding and speak to her? And once STASILAND was published, why did they bring a lawsuit? Anna will also be speaking about the 90-year-old Nazi mystery behind the making of ALL THAT I AM, and about WIFEDOM, her latest multinational masterpiece, in which she gives us Orwell’s brilliant first wife, Eileen, who saved Orwell’s life, co-wrote Animal Farm, but was erased from history. Join us to chat about these untold stories, and what they tell us today about creativity, courage, and truth-telling in our own time. Tickets for her Australian tour this August are available at thinkable.events

This is a terrific piece in @time by @sal_gaddo about @lizstroutauthor ‘s new masterpiece THE THINGS WE NEVER SAY published by @penguinrandomhouse @vikingbooksuk I was utterly floored by this novel—entranced, filled with joy, brought to tears many times. Artie Dam is a high school history teacher, decent to his marrow and trying to stay that way in our difficult times. This book is a triumph, a masterpiece of understated emotion. With enormous empathy, Strout holds a magnifying glass to the human soul. Thrilled to have been able to offer some thoughts for @time on a writer I admire and adore. I’m excited to be going to hear Michelle Obama in conversation with Leigh Sales in Sydney on 21 May. Michelle combines cultural and political power with moral grace, and has become a touchstone for her mantra of ‘When they go low, we go high.’ She’s described ‘going high’ as ‘finding purpose in your rage.’ @leigh_sales , please ask her if she’d ever run for President in her own right! Really delighted and honoured that Penguin Random House have included STASILAND in their Penguin Modern Classics series. The book arrived just now in my postbox— it’s about the 50th edition worldwide, and the first ever Australian hardback of STASILAND. The cover is textured and beautiful, with a shadowy, shimmery female figure reaching out to find the truth in a deluge of files—the stolen biographies, as I put it, of East German citizens. Thank you @penguinbooksaus Johannes Jacob and @nikkichrister and @jessica_bull0ck at The Wylie Agency #penguinrandomhouse #stasiland #editionsheloisedormesson #abiabiographybookoftheyear #feltrinellieditore #prixdumeilleurlivreetranger #bailliegiffordprize

Absolutely delighted to be joining the @sydney_uni as Professor of Practice in Creative Writing. It’s a vibrant, brilliant school in a vibrant, brilliant university where the present is being examined and foundations for our common future are being laid. Big thanks to @vc_usyd @elissablake and A/Prof Andrew Lavery for the warm welcome. And thank you to the two glorious, fresh-minted graduates who agreed to throw their mortarboards into the air to make this photo a thing of joy. Kudos to @swert27 who’s idea it was and @jacqueline_maley_writer for the insightful words.

Imagine 1 in every 7 people you know is watching you. In East Germany, the Stasi didn’t just monitor the streets; they monitored the dinner table. Anna Funder’s chilling breakdown of the most surveilled regime in history is not just history; it’s a warning about the price of privacy. Don’t miss the chance to hear the Stasiland author live in Australia & NZ this August. Secure your spot via thinkable.events #history #annafunder #author #event #australia #newzealand #eastgermany
