I cried in a pool in Brussels. And then I got first place. 🥇
This weekend I competed at the Belgian National Freediving Championships, because the German nationals didn’t work out for me logistically
I trained for almost 3 months in the pool, lost my motivation inbetween and got sick 2 weeks before the comp… 🫠 so I didn’t arrive in my best form.
Day 1
STA — no movement, just breathhold
It’s a pure relaxation and mental discipline and I was SO not relaxed. Not my best moment, we move on 😅
DNF — no fins
Usually my thing, but my goggles broke during warm-up so I switched to an old backup pair with dark lenses, badly scratched. The pool was very shallow on one side and quite dark, while diving I misjudged the distance to the floor, came up too high, lost my buoyancy and struggled to get back down. I surfaced at 75m, not a big dive for me, and got a red card on top of it because parts of my body had broken the surface. Disqualified. 😩
I sat at the side of that pool and cried. Properly cried.
I had trained for this, I had a goal for that dive, and it didn’t work out, I messed it up. Real low point.
Day 2
Freediving is 80% mental so I had to make a new strategy. I had to leave day 1 behind and start fresh. Knowing it couldn’t go worse helped! 😂
And I really wanted to prove it, to myself mostly, that I can do much better!
DYN — monofin
140m, a massive new personal best and first place in the category 🥇😁I got a yellow card for a bad start so penalty points and 1m deducted, but the dive counted, the PB stands and it felt amazing 😁 And if I were Belgian it would be a new national record 😏
DYNB — bifins
Got a white card ✅ but I was so tired after my big monofin dive that I did not do a huge distance.
2 white cards, 1 yellow, 1 red, a new PB and first place DYN. For my second ever competition I am really happy with that, even if I had higher goals. I definitely learned a lot and am so not done yet 😂
Thank you
