Longing for the sun on my skin, now the dark days seem to drag on forever. This time of year makes me introspective, think about what has passed and what is to come. So while I patiently wait for spring to arrive and start a new year of life, I try to treat myself with kindness and warmth.
Looking back to this shoot we did in February last year, how I felt the same as I do now. Makes me think of the beautiful and haunting circularity of life. Capturing the essence of feelings is something I try to do with my work, being able to express myself like this is one of the greatest blessings.
And in case you also need to be reminded. Don't be too hard on yourself, we are not meant to bloom all year long 🤍
Decided to dust off my sfx skills for this siren creature.
Making the flat mould:
* I began with mapping out the general shape by laying down clay on a smooth surface
* Using many different tools to build and shape the clay, when I'm happy with the shape I add skin texture. Using plastic wrap, a stif brush and a poking tool I add pores and lines to make it look realistic
* I make fleshing using more malleable clay, like play dough. I do this so when I have my finished prosthetic it's easier to hold. Then I build a wall around the whole thing with the same clay so I can pour my silicone.
* I mix equal parts silicone and pour this on the clay sculpt, this hardens and creates a silicone mould I can use multiple times to pour my prosthetics.
* Not included in the clip is me spraying a baldiez (plastic layer) in the mould, this keeps the silicone from sticking to itself.
* Then I mix the same silicone components, a softening agent and some colouring to make the silicone more skin like. I pour this in my prepped mould, after this sets I can take it out of the mould and use in my make-up look!
As you can tell making silicone prosthetics is a lengthy process with lots of steps, but I tried to condense it down as much as I could for this video.
Not having the equipment and products I had when I was in school sure made for a challenge sometimes, but I think I did quite well with what I had (and some help from my former classmate and now sfx teacher @julia_warmerdam ). It had also been 3,5 years since I last made prosthetics like these, so it took some time to get back in the flow.
