I began this journey earlier this year in Nigeria, feeling the joy as I watched one of the ways we come together: soccer. Then it clicked. In Africa, we call it football. In America, we have football. So why not make a football jersey! A piece that could hold both worlds at once. But what would any of this be without a woman’s touch? wanted this collection to be a true marriage of both cultures.
Three months after the final sketch, I locked in and sewed both looks in just two weeks. The craziest part is that this was my first time ever making a male garment. Since I was new to working with menswear, I drafted the patterns for both outfits myself and pulled inspiration from everything around me. (It was crunch timeeee)
This collection is about metamorphosizing my identity into one and embracing intersectionality. The jersey reflects the cultural significance of football across the Black diaspora and how it connects us. Growing up in Los Angeles with West African roots, my style has always lived at that intersection. I fused West African Ankara with denim and jersey fabrics to express that duality. The female look features Ankara, beading, corsetry, and a refined edge rooted in Nigerian style, while the male look reimagines the soccer jersey through streetwear, Ankara, beading, and denim.
Sharing my first collection during Black History Month meant so much to me, because this work represents the beauty, complexity, and unity of the Black diaspora. This is only the beginning, and I’m excited to keep pushing these ideas further. Will 🫵🏾 embrace your metamorphosis?
