JAKUPSIL ARTIST HIGHLIGHTS - ANIKOON
A conservsation with the artist in preparation for his solo exhibition and participation at the Future Fair 2026.
Anikoon (b. 1980, Korea) develops his paintings through a labor-intensive process of repeated layering and sandblasting, gradually revealing strata of pigment that produce a weathered, metallic patina—a technique biographical in origin. Growing up alongside iron foundries in 1980s Korea, he absorbed a material environment that now structures his pictorial method: each paint layer accumulates and is worked back, producing surfaces that resemble oxidized metal, making the history of their making legible in the physical constitution of the picture plane. From these textured grounds emerge robotic faces that appear both mechanical and subtly human, reflecting the layered masks individuals carry. His process emphasizes materiality, transforming layered surfaces into spaces where abstraction and figuration coexist with psychological resonance.
Anikoon is currenrly exclusively represented by Jakupsil, and his second solo exhibition in New York is currently on view through May 18, at 2 Rivington St in SoHo/Bowery area. Following the show, Jakupsil is pleased to present a three person presentation of Anikoon, Adam Handler and Raymond Ishii, at Future Fair booth T3 from May 13 - 16 at Chelsea Industrial, 535 W 28th St.

현재 한국과 뉴욕을 오가며 왕성한 활동을 이어가는 애니쿤(b.1980, Korea) 작가는 반복적인 채색과 연마작업을 통해 안료의 층을 쌓고 다시 깎아내는 과정을 반복하며 화면을 구축한다. 이 축적과 제거의 순환 속에서 표면은 풍화되고 산화된 금속같은 질감을 획득하며. 제작의 시간과 행위기 고스란히 화면에 각인된다. 이러한 물질적 감각은 1980 년대 공업지역에서 보낸 유년시절 경험과 맞닿아 있으며 회화는 이미지 뿐 아니라 시간을 응축한 표면으로 작동한다. 그 위에 등장하는 로봇과 마스크의 형상은 기계적임과 인간적임이 교차하는 양가적 상태를 보이며, 고정된 정체성이 아닌 분화된 페르소나를 반영한다. 그의 회화에서 배경은 전면에 놓인 대상과 함께 서사를 생성하는 구조로 기능한다.

@jakupsilny 의 전속작가이며 현재 소호 2 Rivington St 에서 작가의 2번째 뉴욕 개인전 Clockwork Heart 가 5월 18일까지 진행중이다. 곧 오는 뉴욕 아트위크 기간에 (5.13-16) Future Fair booth T3에서 아담핸들러, 레이몬드 이시이와 함께 3인전을 선보인다.
