I moved to New York 30 years ago today. Celebrated by doing the most touristy thing I could think of: Watched the sunrise from the top of the Empire State Building then rode the NYC Ferry up and down the East River. (Forgot how ridiculously early the sun rises, and paying the price now. 😴)

I first saw this play about memory 25 years ago, and the frisson of excitement it sparked has remained lodged in my own memory ever since. Mnemonic, by the brilliant playwright Simon McBurney and the company Complicité, was the first play I saw that opened my mind to what theater could be. And I’m convinced this superb revival at the National Theater will ensure it remains lodged in my memory for another 25 years.
