Andy delighted in every letterform, from the kitsch to the carved. Typo* is not only a celebration of Andy’s lifelong love of graphics and type, it’s a playful insight, adventuring into the letters, signs and symbols that filled his world. As his wife, I’d never met a ‘word-spotter’, where every trip was enlightened with the beauty of type.
Andy managed to complete his book just weeks before cancer tragically caught up with him. Whilst tinged with sadness, this book is his legacy to typographic joy, he wanted nothing more than to make us smile.

I’m a typo* please help me!
Andy’s much-anticipated book typo* is Kickstarting right now. We just need to raise £10,000 to make it happen.
He modestly described typo* as ‘a scrapbook of typographic obsession’, but it’s far more than that.
typo* is 440-plus pages of visual pyrotechnics by a generational creative talent. Each page cascades with typographical food for thought. It mixes observations, musings, memories, anecdote, ephemera, ‘fettling’ and personal infatuations, along with a selection box of his greatest hits.
typo* is destined to become a stone-cold classic design book. There’s only a limited print run, so be sure to reserve your copy now.
Before he left us, Andy asked some of his typographically inclined friends to create cardboard artworks featuring the line ‘I am a typo* please help me’. These will be appearing across social media in the next days, as an invitation to head over to Kickstarter and back an extraordinary piece of work. ‘‘Twas the night after Christmas…
My late father had a tradition of Christmas cards.
In his absence I wanted to continue this tradition, see image one, a simple lino print in the same style as my portrait of him.
Also included in this post are my dad’s Christmas cards from 2020 to 2024.
2022 being my personal favourite- simply his Christmas card list.
I do apologise if you are on this list but have not received a card this year, my organisation skills still need some work. Additionally the addresses I acquired from his address book and phone may have been old.

To us he was loving husband, adored son, best Dad ever. Gentle, caring, full of fun.
As co-founder of Why Not Associates for 33 years, Andy’s projects ranged from huge public art to Royal Mail stamps. With a child-like energy that embraced the unexpected, Andy’s work was underpinned by his meticulous research, an obsessive love for typography and boundless experimentation. Blackpool’s Comedy Carpet, in collaboration with Gordon Young offered up Andy his dream job, blending his lifelong love of comedy with the seriousness of font and letter space.
With so many accolades under his belt, I once asked him what he was most proud of in his career and he simply said ‘To raise a smile everyday.’
Andy passed away at home, surrounded by family, after a heroic battle with cancer. Positive to the end, we will miss you Mr Sunshine 🌞🖤
