📷 @andy.brame

This is Hyde. He’s on the @hospitallers.ukraine_paramedic team that makes sure everyone going out on rotation has what they need to complete their mission. He’s a hard worker and a great problem solver. I also recently learned that he studied acting and once played the role of Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye. So many bright people have left their pursuits to serve their country. It’s always bittersweet to meet them and hear them talk about the passions they left behind. Support Hospitallers! This is Marfa. I met her while she was taking a Hospitallers tactical medicine course. She was taking the course because she lives in Sumy, a border city where the Russians consistently target residential buildings and infrastructure. When she’s there, she is never without her first aid kit, always ready to help those injured by an attack. She also enjoys photography, so while I was on rotation near Sumy, we collaborated on this shoot. It was a real pleasure to get creative with her. And I was thrilled with how the photos turned out.

@olenkabudz says she is learning photography. So I let her borrow my camera and take some photos of me for practice. Here are a few of her photos. If this is what “learning photography” looks like, I can’t wait to see her photos when she masters it.

“There is a lot of darkness in war. I have lost many friends because of it – friends who did not believe it was important to stand up and defend our country, and now we’ve lost touch with each other. But there are also some bright spots. This war has brought new friends. Like you.” This man said that to me, then patiently waited for my teammate Kitsya to help me with the Ukrainian words I didn’t understand. Which was most of them. His callsign is The Stone. He is a member of @3.volyn.uda 3rd Battalion in @uda.army the Ukrainian Volunteer Army. He is the kind of man who makes you proud of who you are and makes you want to be a better, stronger person at the same time. Both simultaneously. It was an honor to stand with him. I hope I see him again.

As families are forced to flee their homes in the villages near the front, many have no choice but to leave their pets behind. @olenkabudz , my teammate, brought dog food on this rotation, because the soldiers from @3.volyn.uda are taking care of a litter of puppies they rescued. @hospitallers.ukraine_paramedic has a sister organization called @hospitails that provides food, veterinary services, and transportation for animals rescued from the front. Backgrounds have been digitally altered to maintain operational security. Support Hospitallers! Link in bio. @hospitallers.ukraine_paramedic @hospitallers.charity

What an absolute boss. Ruslan works with the Hospitallers patronage service, providing support to those who’ve been wounded. He is also one of the funniest men I’ve met. And he only gets funnier as my Ukrainian vocabulary improves. Support Hospitallers! Link in bio. @hospitallers.ukraine_paramedic @hospitallers.charity
