A Cairo University study found that continuous exposure to polyester in direct contact with the groin could impact male fertility in a trial where 14 men wore polyester underwear for a 12 month period. On a positive note, one surprising result was the finding that the impact on fertility was reversible, with subjects returning to baseline levels of spermatogenesis after not wearing polyester for approximately 4-5 months. Altogether, the study found that fertility is not purely influenced by an individual’s hormones, but is highly dependent on environmental conditions, especially where sustained physical activity is frequent. These factors can actually override otherwise normal biological functions.
