Three years ago, I walked out onto the Olympic stage in Tokyo for the first time. A dream come true after so much uncertainty, determination, and most of all, hope. Without a dream and hope, none of this could have happened. I’d relive this moment for the rest of my life.

This photo was taken on a cold December day this past year. During this time I started to reflect, so much can change in our lives—passions, friends, jobs, locations, experiences, dreams, etc. Some of these changes happen in the blink of an eye. Often, we find ourselves facing unexpected changes or having to adapt quickly to new situations. In these moments, we must adapt and take action swiftly. Little by little, we make these new discoveries feel a bit more familiar. In the midst of these changes, there is often a sense of discomfort. We ask ourselves: Is this something we are up for? Is this something we can take on? Life is too short to think that we can’t dive into the unknown. When we hold on, we feel shallow. And the door will always be closed. Henryk Sienkiewicz once said, “Expectancy of anything is always oppressive.” This quote resonates deeply with me. It reminds me that when we cling to expectations, we often feel burdened. But when we let go and remain open to the unexpected, we discover the most amazing things in the most unexpected places. Reflecting on this past year, I realize that the most significant and fulfilling experiences often come when we least expect them. By embracing the unknown and allowing ourselves to be open to new opportunities, we find growth, happiness, and connections that we might have otherwise missed.
