“Making Ground” - Curated by Andrew Ekins - brings together eight artists whose practice finds common ground in an exploration of the relationship between a topographical terrain and a crumpled landscape of the human condition. Their work investigates the friction between habitat and habitation, the intricate relationship between human intervention and mother nature. This exhibition proposes a collective enquiry into the sediment of human presence, the time-worn evidence and tell-tale traces of the human stain. Each artist delves into the shifting strata of memory and experience, mining a seam of personal reflections on the character and consequences of the human signature incised into the ground beneath our feet. These artists share a concern for how we shape and reshape the land we occupy, create and inhabit. Located at the borderland of landscape, bodyscape, info-scape, the work on show aims to examine the duality of urban grit and the rural grandeur of the natural environment Each revels in the imaginative possibilities of material fact, the constituent stuff and substance of making, creating personal geologies that map the heavy footsteps of anthropocentric influence.

Studio Sounds from artist Andrew Ekins
“I prefer music in the studio, instrumental mainly, but it often becomes a background sound as the working thoughts take over. I’ve tried audio books, but they don’t work for me. Too much like having someone else in the studio. The studio walls are thin, I should use headphones, but they create an aural cocoon that feels a bit artificial. I think I like to hear the incidental sounds, sounds that I make as I work.
Current music in the studio = Bach Cello Suites & / or “Dimples” Howling Wolf.
Current pod cast = Rare Earth (BBC)”.

“Making Ground” - Curated by Andrew Ekins - brings together nine artists whose practice finds common ground in an exploration of the relationship between a topographical terrain and a crumpled landscape of the human condition. Their work investigates the friction between habitat and habitation, the intricate relationship between human intervention and mother nature.
This exhibition proposes a collective enquiry into the sediment of human presence, the time-worn evidence and tell-tale traces of the human stain. ‘Making Ground’, curated by Andrew Ekins, brings together artists whose practice finds common ground in an exploration of the relationship between a topographical terrain and a crumpled landscape of the human condition.
Each artist delves into the shifting strata of memory and experience, mining a seam of personal reflections on the character and consequences of the human signature incised into the ground beneath our feet. This exhibition is a part of Ekins’ continuing personal creative research project. As an enquiry into the sediment of human presence, it sets out to investigate the friction between habitat and habitation, the intricate relationship between human intervention and mother nature, drawing a line between the time-worn evidence and tell-tale traces of the human stain.
Preview: Friday 27th March, 6-9pm, all welcome.
