when I arrived in New York for the first time in the summer of 2015, I thought everyone would dress like I had seen in the movies. I was expecting Gossip Girl style outfits all around town.
I was here for a summer internship and on my first weekend, I took myself on a solo date to the MoMa. I wore a white dress and heels, only to realize on the L-train that everyone around me was far more casual.
somewhere between stops, a woman came up to me to ask where my dress was from.
we ended up talking for the entire ride, and before we parted ways, she invited me to a dinner she was hosting at the Soho House the following weekend. I said yes, of course.
the dinner turned out to be mostly Ralph Lauren employees, as she worked for the brand… and Andrew, who was there because he was shooting for them regularly at the time.
it wasn’t love at first sight, not a dramatic movie moment at all. We just had a really good conversation and an instant connection somehow.
after that, I returned to Europe and we kept lightly in touch over the next few years, mostly through occasional replies to Instagram stories.
5 years later, we met again — this time on my side of the Atlantic. By then I had moved to Paris for my studies and Andrew was in town for a photo shoot.
I’m thinking of this story with our third wedding anniversary tomorrow. Take this as your sign that it’s okay to overdress, you never know what it might lead to!
I even ended up wearing that same white dress again for the after-party of our wedding 🤍
