Last Saturday was one of the best days of my life: my piece FANTASIA EN LA PLAZA, which was commissioned by @nyphilharmonic , @juilliardschool and the @americancomposersforum , was premiered flawlessly by these talented musicians at a Young People’s Concert. I’m so thankful for the many friends who came to share this moment with me, and for my family to be there was truly special. They all know how long I waited for this dream to come true, and I felt so loved by them celebrating this milestone with me!
The support I received from those behind the Composing Inclusion program was very uplifting — they renewed my self-belief! Thank so much for choosing me for this adventure and for guiding our group of composers with grace and gusto.
The impressive members of the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra (and some NY Phil veterans) told me my piece was fun to play — that was my primary goal! Their musical wizardry elevated my skills. Hearing your music be performed like this is addictive… THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY INVOLVED: conductors, musicians, administrators, friends, family, etc.

El maestro Alejandro Gutiérrez me pidió que orquestara un popurrí de temas del recientemente fallecido compositor y cantautor argentino-costarricense Adrián Goizueta. ¡La Orquesta Sinfónica UCR se lució con una excelente ejecución, con varios solistas destacándose y un sonido de conjunto muy rico! Espero que mis arreglos honren el legado de Goizueta, uno de los músicos mas influyentes en Costa Rica en las últimas décadas.

Exciting news! Just got a commission from Juilliard to write a symphonic band piece for their Music Advancement Program! 🥳🤩 It’ll be premiered next year by Jonathan Villegas (@jvconductor ) leading talented young musicians ages 8-18!
One of my goals for this year was to try to write more music for wind ensemble, so I’m feeling very grateful to already have gotten this opportunity. Thank you to behind-the-scenes people like Weston Sprott, Anthony McGill, Jonathan Villegas and Megan Zhang for believing in me.

Today is my 7th anniversary of moving to Los Angeles!!!🥳🤩🙌🏼
Moving here was the best decision I’ve made so far. I greatly enjoy my lifestyle, the proximity to nature, the enviable weather, the amount of interesting people from all over the world that I’ve met here. But sometimes it feels like the determination and optimism that was so palpable in my first few years here might be starting to dwindle. The nature of my line of work often lends itself to comparison when you see others obtaining what you dream of — it’s natural, although not the best way to look at things. When you feel you want something somebody else has, you must remember somebody else probably wants something you already have.
But then I remember that I promised myself to always keep a sense of hope and naïveté in order to avoid cynicism. Some people want to be realists, but I rather live like a hopeful idealist (perhaps that’s why I like Don Quixote so much). Yes, there are things I want from life that I feel I am nowhere close to obtaining, but I remind myself that sometimes in the blink of an eye your whole world can change. Yet I look back to the last seven years (a blink of an eye!) and I have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to celebrate!
An old-timer once told me that the sweetest things in life are the surprises. When I moved here 7 years ago I had no idea what would happen, and so far I have lived tons of memorable experiences, met lovely people, visited beautiful places, hosted friends and family… and now I’m eager for 2026 to surprise me. I don’t have control over how it will — but I do have control on my outlook. So I resolve to continue to live by faith by practicing what I believe in: to find spaces for community and connect people to each other, to be loyal to my loved ones and kind to strangers, and to create art that leads others to enjoy the depths and beauties of God’s creation, all this by striving to build relationships to achieve this. I type this under the California sun for warmth, under the blue sky for freedom, and by a palm tree for a good time!
