Jazz Musician Observation: A subtle epidemic of making mockery of gospel music within the African diaspora and blues based music is in effect. I've had students come to me telling me instructors are stating their approach is too "churchy" or "soulful"
That's utterly ridiculous. Dismiss the roots that created the fruits and you have some pretty sterile music that reaches no one but academicians.
In the words of the late, great Bobby Hutcherson, stop playing note politics.

I don't care how old I get, my heart melts every time to hear my awesome father, Melvin Hayward offer encouraging words when it comes to life and my music career.
He's my first musical hero. All that I do comes from his beautiful piano and organ playing in addition to planting musical seeds via The Hayward Singers Saturday rehearsals as a kid.
Ask me the secret to my playing and I'll swiftly say I'm from a strong bloodline of preachers and ministers of music.
Current situations and circumstances I was hurting and suffering in silence just got washed away.
Thank you Daddy. I love you so much. 🙂❤️💯💥🤝🙏
God Bless,
Andre Hayward

Jazz Improvisation Tip: Let's discuss internalizing chord changes. It's been stated for all single note players to arpeggiate the chords (135 | 1357) outline scales, or use fragmented melodic patterns on any given tune.
That's all fine and by all means a path to getting the sound of a song's chord structure in one's ear however, these elements shouldn't be practiced as the great Horace Alexander Young states, "In a vacuum". Melodicism is the end goal.
A more effective approach is stating the tune numerous times and tastefully plugging these harmonic devices in appropriate areas in the bar. This allows freedom to build lines from any degree of the scale or chord. Of course this means having full command of intervals, modes and inversions.
This also applies to any pieces of vocabulary borrowed from your favorite players.
Give it a go. You'll find your practice sessions more enjoyable and productive.

Jazz Education Observation: What's the point of inviting clinicians/consultants to coach your kids if it poses a threat to your ego or perhaps deficiencies? Why be envious of those who are in the trenches?
The goal should be empowering youth and increasing your knowledge base.
We all have the same 24 hours and 7 days. Remain a student of your respective instrument and harmony. The late, great Jimmy Cleveland says, "All day long. A little at a time." This eliminates all guilt, excuses, and insecurities.
Some play. Some teach. Some are fans and patrons. It takes a village.
