(Honey, I wish this was sponsored.) I love being a regular in general, but I especially love being a regular at a queer-owned bar this idiosyncratic and delicious. In 1920s and 30s Hollywood, Lupe Vélez was branded the "Mexican Spitfire," "hot tamale," "Mexican Hurricane" and "señorita cyclone."
The Mexican-born actress was known for her lively, vivacious personality and intermittent intensity, often fighting with lovers and rivals alike in Hollywood nightspots. While her sometimes violent outbursts were often attributed to her 'exotic' ethnicity by the largely white press at the time, it's since been suggested by more educated parties that her behavior may have been due to undiagnosed bipolar disorder instead.
