What If We Align Our Breath is out today! I've been working on this music during the last two years and I'm so happy to finally release it to the world today and see what path it takes. You'll find it on your preferred channel digitally or in transparent aquamarine vinyl. If you feel like supporting it then head to bandcamp, link in bio🙏🏼 Although it is a "Solo album" there are so many people involved who all helped shaping it into the thing it is now, and I'd like to thank all of them from the bottom of my heart. First of all my main collaborator on this journey, @shanecoopersounds , who co-produced, -recorded and mixed the whole body of work at his @kujuarecords studios, plus played double bass on two tracks. Then @kolekaputuma who wrote and performed an amazing poem reflecting on this music, on the voice and breath. Ben LaMar Gay ( #blgnoig ) who added a magic spell on his cornet. Watch out when you listen to it, you will be changed after it. @makhenegontse who layed down his unique udu drums. And @giuli000 who did his usual mastering magic and made the album sparkle in all colors of the rainbow. @molly.fairhurst did the wonderful original artwork, illustrations who catch the spirit of the music so beautifully. And @kaiservalentin at @bureaustrada masterfully designed the whole Vinyl and digital artwork. @richard.greenan and @kitrecs give What If We Align Our Breath a home and I'm super happy and honored to be part of this catalogue and family. And the whole process was supported by Stadt Zürich Kultur, Fachstelle Kultur Kanton Zürich, KulturZürichseeLinth and @prohelvetia_johannesburg #whatifwealignourbreath #andreastschopp #kitrecords

I'm super excited to announce the upcoming release of my first solo album What If We Align Our Breath, which will be out on Kit Records @kitrecs on March 20! This music has been growing for almost two years and I'm so happy to finally being able to share it. It's centered around the sound of the kudu horns, ancient mystical vibrations, which I'm blessed to have met and learnt about from friends in South Africa. They are all over the place doing their magic, together with trombone of course, but also flutes of all kinds, homemade clay instruments and other good sounding things I happen to have met somewhere along the way. I can't really tell what kind of music this is except that it feels like taking a good breath and feeling connected to some kind of universal subconscious interconnectedness. Which feels comforting. Empowering, even. What if we align our breath? I had some wonderful artists joining me on parts of this trip, first of all Shane Cooper @shanecoopersounds who co-produced, -recorded and mixed the album, plus played some double bass, poet Koleka Putuma @kolekaputuma wrote and performed a beautiful piece, the leg Ben LaMar Gay #blgnoig joins for a magic spell on his cornet and Gontse Makhene @makhenegontse lays down unique udu drums. And in the end Giuliano Sulzberger @giuli000 made it all three dimensional through his mastering. Pre-orders are open from today on bandcamp, link in bio, if you jump right in you'll even catch bandcamp friday which means your contribution goes straight to the music, no platform fees, yay! 1: photo by @jeremieluke 2: artwork by @molly.fairhurst , design by @bureaustrada

Swiss musician Andreas Tschopp has just completed a research trip in South Africa focusing on the traditional kudu horn instrument. In 2016 Andreas was supported for a three-month residency in South Africa, where he first encountered the instrument. He was captivated by the sound, but also the physics of the instrument and it’s natural tone series. He began incorporating the kudu horn into his work in various contexts and creating short kudu loops and musical sketches. Andreas then began experimenting with finger holes and adapting the horn from a signalling to a melodic instrument. This research became the catalyst for a new project to develop a solo programme with the kudu horns at centre stage. This research trip was an important aspect in the development of the project. Andreas recaps his journey 💬 “I spent time in Makhanda visiting the legendary International Library of African Music archives and finding recordings of horn music from all over Southern Africa. I also worked with Christian Carver from the African Musical Instruments factory, experimenting with manipulations to kudu horns. Following this, I spent a week with @shanecoopersounds at Kujua Studios in Johannesburg, working on my music which aims to combine his take on the kudu horn with trombone and other wind instruments. In parallel, I’ve been learning about the different traditions of horn music from multi-instrumentalist and researcher @mphomolikeng in Soweto. Finally, I could refresh my contacts in the thriving local jazz scene and even join the Kyle Shepherd Trio on stage for a few songs.” __________ #prohelvetia_johannesburg #prohelvetia_researchtrip

What If We Align Our Breath - Album Listening Session! 💫🦌💜 Bern, 01.05., 7pm, @daskulturat album listening session, talk and dj set together with South African album co-producer Shane Cooper @shanecoopersounds 18:30 doors 19:00 listening bar & dj Pioneering Swiss trombonist and composer Andreas Tschopp marries contemporary jazz with South African horns and homemade ocarinas, creating a record quite unlike anything you've heard before. "What if We Align Our Breath" disregards the curvature of borders, genre, and time itself - tugging a thread through the history of wind instrumentation with ghostly agility. At the heart of the record lie spiralling, bonelike kudu (antelope) horns - instruments that have lent their stirring calls to indigenous South African rituals and signalling systems for millennia. These horns are clustered, harmonised and stretched beyond their godly usage by Tschopp - his extended techniques coaxing an array of melancholy, playful voices to canter through the album. Flourishes of trombone, alpine flutes and a stellar supporting cast on double bass (Shane Cooper), cornet (Ben LaMar Gay), udu drums (Gontse Makhene) and spoken word (Koleka Putuma) bring groove, countermelody and a sense of earthy introspection to the proceedings. This is inconceivable music: a sighing tapestry of brass, clay and bone that hints at some preconscious connectedness, tracing figures that rejoice, exhale and embrace outside of time.
