25 and thriving! Every birthday hits a little different but this one definitely made me pause. I remember being 25 and the years rolled out ahead of me ready to be filled with so many things. There is so much for our Meche to learn, see, create, and experience. And equally there is so much already that she has accomplished. An award-winning playwright, graduated top of her class, has written and made art, on the verge of being published, on the cusp of more magic - all of her own creation. Proud isn’t enough of a word. She will always be late, as she was when she was born, but the wait will always be worth it when she busts through that door. Love you my sweet girl. ❤️
This was us. We became friends some 25 years ago when I was at TIFF and she worked in the press office. Jacqueline Brodie - the classiest woman I have ever known. We became closer as we both aged and over the years she became a mentor, a cool auntie, a source of wisdom, and a very dear friend. She had stories like no one else - what a life she lived! Worked at her vocation until recently and always with so much reverence for artists. Jacquie showed me how to deal properly with the French, taught me how to be diplomatic, and deepened my knowledge and love for cinema. And she saw me in a way that very few people have. She left us on March 3 at the young age of 95. I honestly thought she would live forever and perhaps took that for granted at times. I cried most of the day yesterday but today I’m going to wipe the tears because she would hate that shit. I was her bellisime and she was my sweet Jacquie and I will miss her every single day. ❤️ I hope you are somewhere with your beloved Frank having a beautiful coupe 🥂
Happy birthday to one of the best men I know. As a kid, he wore a tee that said “Feminist” and he’s certainly grown into that label. Thank you for being such an incredible human. Your talent and intelligence are remarkable. And your beautiful soul even more so. Love you Joaquin! When people say “not all men are like that” we are talking about you. ❤️
In my line of work, I meet and deal with famous and creatively exceptional people all the time. And yes it can be cool, but after decades of it, mainly I consider it work. Last night, on my own time and of my volition, I did something I never do and I lined up to tell @elizabeth_gilbert_writer how much her writing has meant to me from the first time I picked up Eat, Pray, Love in 2006. Her journey and creative courage has been inspiring to millions around the world and I am one of them. Lord knows what I said to her because I felt incredibly vulnerable and an even a bit sheepish. What struck me most is the sparkle in her eyes that have seen so much and her generosity of spirit.
Congrats to Liz Gilbert on a sold out show in Toronto! May there be many more.

This is the first year that there will be no first day of school photos on the stairwell. No one really prepares you for this moment. You know it’s coming from the start and somehow we convince ourselves that the life we have is the one we will always have. And that’s simply the biggest lie we tell ourselves. If you’ve followed for a while, you know how beyond proud I am of my kids. They are the best thing I have ever done by a million miles. Parenting doesn’t end when the first day of school photos do, but it definitely is a milestone in their growth. My heart is full of pride and excitement for them as it also aches for them to be children again. Nostalgia is a form of grief and that is the stage all humans go through. A reminder to live in the moment, recognize the specialness of the small things because they really do end up being the big things. Wishing all the parents out there a smooth day of transition, whatever stage you are in. And a special hug for our Golden Hawk as he settles into his new environment. We love you Felix. ❤️
Time is weird. No matter how present you try to be, it still slips through your fingers. The last babe is ready to fly. We couldn’t be prouder of this gem of a person. We love you Felix. ❤️

Last night we had the distinct pleasure of witnessing brilliance in action. Meche’s work All That’s Been Said presented at the Tarragon is a hilarious, wildly original, moving, mind-and-time bending ride. I am reminded of the four year old who would whip around the house with imaginary and real friends, with a trunk full of costumes, and talking a mile a minute, whose creativity knew no bounds. Now as the Artist in residence, is presenting spectacular work at an established theatre… And she’s just getting started. So proud of you @mechemonkey ❤️. Brava!
