Genderless, 2025.
Not as a trend, but as a way of seeing.
Back in 2023, I made my first photo series about gender, and it sparked a lot of different interpretations. That stayed with me. It made me realize there’s still a lot to unpack. This work comes from questioning why clothing has to belong to a certain gender, and what happens when that boundary is removed. Using a diptych approach, I place the same pieces on different bodies, letting the focus shift away from labels and toward form, silhouette, and presence.
In Indonesia, the way we see gender is still closely tied to long-standing norms. The way we dress, how we present ourselves, even how we’re expected to exist in public space. There are already unspoken rules around it. Clothing becomes one of the clearest markers to separate masculine and feminine. This work is a responds to that, not in a opposite way, but by offering another perspective. Where gender doesn’t have to be immediately defined just by appearance.
