In a turn of events, Puma got to go on as OLD DEUTERONOMY in @catsjellicleball !!! To say we were ecstatic would be an understatement. It was lovely to see him shining on that stage. We’re so grateful he got the opportunity to fill in for such an iconic legend, such as Mr. André DeShields. Thank you so much to everyone who came to see him. He’ll be on again as OLD DEUTERONOMY Saturday, May 9 at 2pm!

Here’s some footage from our opening night experience. It was truly magical. The kitties were PURRING FULL OUT! We had an absolute blast at the show and got to experience one of the best cast parties in a long time. I danced in the corner because the real ballroom voguers took over the entire dance floor!
Funny story, though. That photo with the legend, @nilerodgers , threw me for a loop. Puma was taking forever to get out of costume, and I said to Mr. Rogers,” My husband is going to FREAK OUT that we met you!“ Mr Rodgers said, “ No pun intended!” Y’all I didn’t even realize I said that! 😂😂😂 IYKYK!

It has taken me an entire week to come down from the high of the NEW EDITION, TONI BRAXTON, BOYZ II MEN CONCERT. I went to see The Jets and New Edition when I was Zani’s age, and to be able to take her to this iteration was one of the most special experiences I’ve ever had.
She’s been OBSESSED with NE since she first saw the miniseries NEW EDITION STORY. Have you ever seen it? If you haven’t, you must. It is some of the best casting I have ever seen. PERIOD.
I was emotional for several different reasons during this concert. One, just experiencing something we both love so much TOGETHER. Meditating on how this music is STILL good after all these years brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t stop thinking about being a little kid and hearing Mr. Telephone Man and Candy Girl for the very first time and losing my mind. It was PANDEMONIUM in the 80s when these songs hit the airwaves. I was saddened about the fact that so much of their money was stolen in their youth, and they worked so hard for it.
I know my kid gets tired of hearing me harp about how music today doesn’t compare. Not to say that there’s not great music in this modern era. There is. However, it is challenging to find that soulful, AUTHENTIC R&B sound. A lot of people in this generation don’t know the roots of the Black sound. It has been manipulated, watered down and frankly, stolen or borrowed. Which is fine. Everybody borrows music styles but credit is not always given, unfortunately. After hearing Boyz II Men, Zani understood exactly what I meant. She had not really heard music like that before. Those harmonies are on a different level. I could go on and on about all that. One really cool thing was to hear how “NAYUUUUUUU” 🎶 made its way through all the artists! Did I mention Johnny Gil, Bell Biv Devoe, Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown were all separate acts in this show, aside from New Edition? Ya’ll this was a WHOLE CONCERT, ya hear me? I can’t even explain it properly but just know it was a nostalgic evening filled with joy and a lot of artists bending knees trying to get us ladies to give in! Final thoughts. 10/10

This is my older sister, Petronia, singing at our home church. This video could be 25 or 30 years old. We’re not sure, so sorry for the sound distortion and blurriness.
This is the type of gospel music that not just anybody can sing. You have to have RANGE! Petronia was known as a TOP SOPRANO. Back in the 70s and 80s, that’s what they called a designated person who would sing a random high note whenever the choir director pointed to the soprano section. You had to be ready because our director, Cleo, was known to improv on the spot! lol. Petronia has been singing like this since she was a teenager. When she sang The Prayer at my wedding, my voice teacher, Everett McCorvey said, “ I don’t care what your sister THINKS she is. She is a classical singer.” We thought that was hilarious.
Take a listen to this entire video, which I spliced up so you hear the highlights of how choirs and soloists used to sing back in the day. Most churches are doing contemporary Christian music which is a completely different sound. That’s a story for another day.

Puma has come to the FINAL THRESHOLD!!! He completes his time at MASQUERADE tonight after playing PIANGI and getting the opportunity to perform PHANTOM for over a month. They say James Brown was the hardest working man in show business but lemme tell you Puma’s right up there because this track was a BEAST!! Yet he performed it with such grace. Thank you to everyone who came to see this remarkable production. Didn’t get pics of everyone who came during his run but we definitely had folks travel from all over the country to see it. I hope you all know how much it meant to have you there, showing your support. @zanijonesmbayise and I are so grateful that we got to go on this journey with you! Sending blessings for whatever is next!!!
