#6 - "Wurden", by Hiske Oosterwijk (2021) Personnel: @officialhiske – voice/composition/lyrics/production Evgeny Lebedev – piano Artem Baskakov – double bass Makar Novikov – double bass/electric bass/cello Sasha Mashin – drums @nielsvoskuil – drums/production @job.posthuma – guitar (nylon/acoustic/electric) @lord.mortis - piano @rosietaekema - cello Yours truly – double bass Benson Enowben Itoe – electric bass How many virtues can unite in a vocalist? Hiske is one of those rare artists whose work and presence offer a compelling answer. A beautiful tone, technical prowess, precision, unbreakable will, theatrical intensity, showmanship… she truly embodies them all. It has always been a genuine pleasure to cross musical paths with her, from performing the music of jazz trumpet star Alex Sipiagin alongside her and the man himself, to witnessing her evolution as a composer, singer songwriter, and even theatre show author and director. Whatever the setting, playing with Hiske has always meant taking care of business with high spirits and high standards, leading to many years of adventures and friendship. It was therefore an easy yes when she invited me to be part of Wurden, a record that weaves together a wide range of styles and influences, from contemporary jazz to pop, with lyrics drawn from the poetry of 17th century Frisian writer Gysbert Japicx. A truly unique concept. The album was released on Zennezrecords, features an array of exceptional musicians, and is available on all major streaming platforms.

#5 - "Step one", Kuvenda (2021) Line up: @miroherak - vibraphone @andresthorjazz - guitar Yours truly - double bass @vinsentplanjer It was great fun to join this project led by Miro Herak and Andres Thor, which, contrary to how it usually goes, started off in the recording studio where this EP was born. The instrumentation was refreshing, as was the material and the playing, informed by varying styles and genres. Enough to keep me awake during the recording, after a sleepless night. Andres got us to do a mini-tour in Iceland after that, which was a memorable experience in so many ways. From playing at the Harpa centre in Reykjavik straight out of the airport, to going whale watching, to getting addicted to one of the most dangerous candies on the planet, Lakkris.

#4 - "Tales From Some of Those Lands", by Daniel Juarez (2019) Line up (on this track): @danieljuarezmusic - saxophone @alvaro_delvalle_guitar - guitar @jcasta87 - piano Yours truly - double bass @r0bert0pist0lesi The first time I met Daniel must have been in a dollar pizza store in NY. While waiting for our slice, Jorge introduced him to me as an absolute beast on the saxophone, so when we got the chance to reunite and play in Groningen I knew I was in for a treat. And nobody in that band disappointed. Besides Daniel and Jorge, we had one of Italy's finest (and most hilarious) on drums, Roberto, and the gentle in life but wild on guitar, Alvaro. We started working on a fully original repertoire and boy did that give me homework to do. I felt like everyone in that band had way more experience and tricks than me, especially when it comes to playing odd meters and metric modulation. Daniel and Alvaro had been working on freedom through unusual forms and meters for a long time already, and it was an incredible experience to (sometimes barely) hold it down while witnessing their adventurous spirit at work. Our collaboration culminated with the making of this record at the fabulous @meccarecordingstudio in San Sebastian. I had to pull through a bad stomatitis while at it, but the care, humor and professionalism of everyone involved made it a success and something we were all proud of. Following the release we toured Spain a few more times and I cherish those gigs as some of the most inspiring and formative moments of my career. So thank you Daniel, Alvaro, Jorge and Roberto! "Tales from Some of Those Lands" is available on all main streaming platforms.

#3 - "Convergence", by Jia Xia (2019) Line up: Nathaniel Gao - alto saxophone @ithoughtmusic_xj - piano Yours truly - double bass @zhitong_xzt - drums My collaboration with pianist, composer and friend Jia Xia was yet another blessing in my life. As a more seasoned player, he created the calling for me to deal with more modern and specific sounds, and to be ready for more openness in performance. His background in classical music informs his playing as much as his willingness to jump into the unknown and catch ideas from the ether. He pushed my playing to its very limits, and the head of "Dream of Penta-color soil" is a great example. Jia Xia also got 2 other great humans and musicians into the picture, Nathaniel Gao and Zhi Tog Xu. I had an absolute blast working with them at @exaltostudios , and touring China. Besides the wonderful musical challenges, I recall getting lost in Beijing on my way to one of our gigs, having the best beef noodle soup of my life, staying up till 4am at a karaoke watching Jia Xia sing surprisingly well, and the outstanding welcoming and care we received when playing at Guangzhou Jazz Festival. "Convergence" is available on all main streaming platforms.

#2 - Little lights, by Evelien Storm (2018) Line up: @evelienstormmusic - vocals @suzanvenemanmusic - trumpet @joost_van_der_beek - guitar @vincent.grit - piano Yours truly - double bass @denniselderman - drums My brief... very brief appearance in Dutch pop, I guess? The trivia on this record falls short. It was an easy, lighthearted, and cheerful experience. I think at the time I was generally overplaying, and this was a perfect occasion to distill my playing to something more essential and supportive, hopefully not to the detriment of my musical self. Props to Evelien for the beautiful singing and writing, and for bringing me together with some of Groningen's finest: Joost, Vincent, Dennis, and Dutch jazz trumpet rising star, Suzan, who found the perfect sound for the occasion. Available on all main streaming platforms.

#1 - Falga (2015) Line up: @giuseppedoronzotorarec - baritone saxophone Lucio Tasca - guitar @federico_pozzer - piano Yours truly - double bass Aleksandar Skoric - drums In hindsight, the word Falga marks a very special time in my life. Imagine a group of misfits, all studying at the same conservatory, starting to jam together. Some of us were classically trained; some weren’t. The common denominator was a love for jazz—but even more so, a hunger for uncharted territory. Much of the process was non-linear. There was no goal other than exploration. We had all the time in the world: no gigs breathing down our necks, and every ounce of willingness to ask, what if? Tunes slowly began to take shape, all the while remaining widely improvised and open-ended. Gigs started coming in. We became very active throughout the Netherlands, and it was with this band that I played for the first time at TivoliVredenburg. When we finally felt ready, we went for it—and the record came to life. Our sound began to be recognized by people outside the musician bubble. Reviews were generally positive, with the highlight being a four-star review in Trouw, published right next to a three-star review of an Elton John album. Entirely subjective, of course—but we laughed about that for weeks. Some extra fun facts: I drew the CD artwork by hand while lying in bed with a high fever, in an apartment at the top of a skyscraper in New York. While there, I managed to hand a copy to none other than John Zorn after meeting him at his legendary venue, The Stone. “Maestro, I know you’re very busy, but… could I ask you to listen to my band and maybe let me know what you think?” I said—fully aware that the odds were not in my favor. Zorn didn’t hesitate. He agreed immediately, asked for my email address, and a few days later there he was in my inbox, congratulating us on having forged what he considered a unique sound. Not bad for a debut album. Find us on bandcamp: /album/falga

This is a special one. Aside from being an old friend of mine and someone who taught me a lot, Murat is a truly fresh voice in music – a quiet, gentle experimentalist who tirelessly crafts his art. His Turkish roots and love for various streams of jazz and Western classical music have shaped the stories told in this new album, which I was happy to be a part of. The band: @alimuratcengiz @george_dumitriu_ @giuseppedoronzotorarec @prashant_samlal @vinsentplanjer Yours truly "Havam Yerinde" is out on all streaming platforms.

I enjoy going into a free intro to a tune with no plan. It’s an opportunity to play what I hear in the moment, and it’s interesting to see what changes and what stays consistent from one take to the next. Here are two examples from a recent studio session. Video credits: @trombone_pasha

Playing with @marcelparkmusic and @potamianosgiorgos is great fun! Here's me getting lost in the bass on Sam Jones' Bittersweet. A big thank you to @annabelly93 for handling the filming ❤️

Murat Ali Trio is ON! The first word that comes to mind when I think of @alimuratcengiz is affinity.  Spanning over 10 years, our artistic collaboration has actualized some essential parts of our vision(s) and is now growing stronger than ever. Great human being and drummer @gabi.matei.31 joined us, bringing loads of kindness and cool beats to the table. We are happy to introduce this brand new band to the world by sharing with you 3 new studio recordings, the first of which drops today. We hope you'll enjoy our music. More coming up very soon!
