We met with Pittsburgh City Councilman Bob Charland’s office today to discuss low streaming pay, the Living Wage for Musician’s act, and other possible legislative measures. We discussed the plight of musicians & other music industry professionals in our region and how we are now working in an industry with little to no physical product, which means we don’t see financial results from exposure the way we used to. With streaming being the default operating system of our industry, we must create a meaningful stream of pay so musicians can keep creating, performing, and thriving! I got to perform Wilco’s “Jesus (Etc.)” I always love that song— one of the number of non-dead songs played. Each song on @randallbgram ’s setlist perfectly contributed to the hand-on-heart emotional, joyful energy, with themes of love, anti-war, blues rock, folk, grit. It was a send-off to one of the great artists and humans of our day. Lucky to be alive at the same time as Bobby - I’m lucky to be alive at the same time as all these incredible performers I cherish as friends and contemporaries in my community. Andre Costello returns to Bottlerocket with a few friends in tow for what’s become an annual tradition - an evening celebrating the full songbook of Neil Young; from the acoustic harmonies that created a folk icon to the loud and brash tunes that made him the Grandfather of Grunge - and everything in between. From Tin Soilders to Kinder, Gentler Machine Gun Hands - for better or worse Neil’s music has continued to prove itself as being as relevant as ever.
Andre’s show is (still!) the highest attended show in Bottlerocket history, and was so fantastic I asked him to perform at my wedding - so believe me when I tell you that Neil is an all-time favorite of ours here at Bottlerocket, and no one in the city can capture his unique sound quite like Andre.
Just left Congresswoman Summer Lee’s office to begin an important conversation about making music streaming fair for artists — including increasing payouts by 300x.
We had a great first meeting with her staff and are excited to push this work forward. Musicians, songwriters, and performers have been left behind by the streaming age, and it’s actively hurting our art form. It’s time to bring the value of our music back to the people who create it.
With the support of UMAW, this movement is already happening nationwide — starting at the local level and building toward federal change. We’re proud to announce the formation of P.U.M.A. — Pittsburgh United Musicians Alliance.
