Last month we marked the launch of ‘Ecotones: Where the Urban & Rural Embrace’ with a sensory exploration of the River Avon that surrounds Spike Island 🦦
Following talks from myself
@flofitz_ and the community project
@room13hareclive , we were lead out to the water’s edge by
@andr.sang who shared tricks for attuning our senses to the watery world around us. After a period of silent wayfaring with a partner, we returned to
@spikeisland ’s sculpture yard to exchange observations, and contribute to ‘The River Book’ ~ an evolving artifact which will be user by the primary school children of
@room13hareclive to inspire their
Wild Spaces public art project commissioned by
@universityofbristol 🌱
Thank you to everyone who participated, to
@saphia.a.venner for the support, and to
@edjbholland for the photos! 📸

Ecotones is a year-long programme of events and activities curated by
@flofitz_ as part of
@spikeisland Engagement programme, kindly supported by
@hauserwirth .
This year-long programme explores the ecotones between urban and rural environments from an intersectional and inclusive perspective. Questioning pervasive assumptions about urban and rural spaces as divided and disconnected, the project aims to unearth the layers of relationality and connectedness between them.
Working alongside interdisciplinary artists, this programme invites young people and local communities to explore notions of belonging, and relationships with the more-than-human world, producing alternative modes of connection with their localities.
