When I went out to see you DJ in Dundee on a Friday night, I didn’t think I’d end up topless in Berghain 48 hours later. Of course, that was after a Genk pit stop where I got to meet the legendary DJ Rashad.
Judging a game of tune for tune between you and I back at the hotel, the Chicago man thought it would be funny to rig the contest in my favour. I remember him whispering the words ‘Blackstreet - No Diggity’ to me during the R’n’B round to make it 3-0, but fuck knows what any of the other tunes were. You went silent for about half an hour before this room service guy showed up. You then lifted the lid on the stainless steel cloche to reveal a full salmon before slapping me across the coupon with it. Looking back, it’s perhaps my best lesson. It truly was justice by fish slap.
I loved watching you mix in the studio where you’d ask whatever mate was in sight to ‘pick a record, any fucking record’ from the vinyl wall and blend it in seamlessly. You could’ve partook in that dynamic in any environment in the world. A true example of dedication breeding success and another lesson I can take from you in my own life.
