For four years I’ve been sitting on a collection of photos that marked people’s “before”, shared in early lockdown. I present it to you now as “Accidental Significance”, a zine on @astringent.press .
Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how we’re in a world where luck and privilege are the only things many rely on to keep from getting really sick.
But in sharing this zine for print, I mentioned the optimism I felt in seeing these photos together. A moment of community in isolation. A reminder of holding hope and small persistences. All that is still there for us.

On a lark, made a “font” called Courier New+7. It’s based on the N+7 writing technique. An ode to all my old TextEdit windows filled with OuLiPo poetry. A pile of nonsense that’s crucially (and hilariously) only legible by the machines it’s kept on.

Recently resolved to make more things with more friends. When I do, I’ll share them on @minimum.order : a new project based around tiny runs of things you can own, with all profit going elsewhere.
First is a project with Very Famous Type Designer @fffffabifabiola . We turned a personal motto into a poster design, and now it’s a deliciously textured 3 color risograph print courtesy @risolve .

I made Arbitrary Inputs an app. The prompts can be read in sequence like a poem or copied by tapping their swatch. You can also narrow the range with whatever word comes to mind, like “what”, “it”, or “potato”. Paste and use the ones you like wherever and however you’d like.

Ten-ish years ago I started a blog called “Arbitrary Numbers”. I wrote for it until the wheels fell off. I don’t anymore. As an attempt to tap into that electricity I decided to reverse engineer the prompt of every single essay, poem, and fiction that lived there.
I barely know the guy who did all that writing. Looking through it I started fixating on how once in ad school someone said, “Yeah Ananta’s always sad, but the kind of sad where he’ll be okay.”
Anyway this is a version of what came from the exercise, which I’m calling Arbitrary Inputs. They’re my disgust at standard creative prompts. My take on Oblique Strategies. My coming to terms with my birthday, today.
Maybe they’ll help you get out of a creative rut like they did for me. Maybe not. That’s okay too.
