AIxDESIGN Festival: On Slow AI is happening May 1-3, 2025 in Amsterdam - a 3-day playful exploration where we'll deconstruct mainstream AI narratives and dream up new ones. Think of it as a living room for ideas where you can get inspired, scribble in the corner, grab lunch with a new friend, jump into a workshop, or just listen in on conversations that shift how you see AI.
🛺 Would you share this with your frens, communities, fellow nerds, teachers, co-conspirators, arch nemesis, and anyone who might dig this vibe? We've got a cute promo kit with ready-to-go visuals made by our fantastic designer @anamarques.lab and captions by our resident meme lord @666ultracorpo999 all compiled for your ease of sharing.
And if you’re based in Amsterdam, you’re invited to come pick up a stack of cute flyers to help spam the word IRL! 🗞️
Tag us if you share (aixdesign.co on IG, aixdesign.bluesky on Bluesky, AIxDESIGN on LinkedIn) - we love to see it!
🎪 AIxDESIGN Festival: On Slow AI wouldn’t be possible without the support of @stimuleringsfonds , @elisava.school@the_naf_official , @beeldgeluid , @filmacademie , @cultuurfonds , Jagt Zwolsman fonds, @Loods6 , and our lovely Community Supporters.
RELEASE ALERT 🚨 (6/9) “Small AI Chapter” is out now! 🔗 Zoom into the full chapter on our website → https://aixdesign.co/posts/small-ai-chapter (link in bio) 🔍
The Small AI chapter invites us to rethink AI not as something floating in “the cloud,” but as deeply entangled with land, ecologies, and people — showing how technology can prioritize community value in design and governance 🦋
From artists building their personal AI models to citizen scientists preserving marginalized languages, the chapter highlights the power of small-scale approaches to protecting cultural heritage and supporting ecological resilience 🌱
Challenging the “bigger-is-always-better” mindset, Small AI calls for AI development that prioritizes real-world needs over abstract, infinite scaling — an AI that serves humanity today.
This chapter is the manifestation of @nadning and the team’s past 12 months of research into Small AI ⏳ A labour of love, we’d love to hear your thoughts!
And remember – you can chat with @nadning and come build your own tiny LLM at the 🎪 AIxD Festival 🎪 this May 1-3, at Loods6 in Amsterdam (tix are available now at https://lu.ma/yiaccf39)!

🐌 ABOUT SLOW AI
The Slow AI project seeks to imagine alternative narratives for AI, unpacking and moving beyond Silicon Valley ideologies. Inspired by countermovements like slow fashion and slow food, it aims to subvert corporate-first thinking by collectively exploring new perspectives and pathways for AI. Slow AI is made possible through the support of @stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie 🪼
RELEASE ALERT (5/9) 🚨 Make-your-own-small AI tutorials are live now!
Project D33pthr0at by Gabriella Garcia & Arnab Chakravarty explored the practical possibilities of applied Small AI, with a specific focus on creating resources for sex workers facing censorship and misrepresentation in mainstream AI platforms. Investigating critical socio-technical questions, the research gave rise to two interconnected outcomes that form a foundation for future community-centered AI initiatives:
⚙️ Tutorial for "How-to: Install your own Small AI"
🔎 Documentation of their process-oriented exploration of critical AI development practices
The edited workshop recording, step-by-step walk-through, and additional documentation - essentially a flatpack for getting your own local LLM up and running - are now available to you at → 🔗 aixdesign.co/posts/project-d33pthr0at
Get DIYing and let us know what you make! 🧛 And if you like additional support, join us at the AIxDESIGN festival for the Small AI workshop on Thursday May 1st to work through it all together 🤝
