On the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, I had a great honour to be invited as one of the panelists for the memorable moments that was a turning point for global climate action signed by 195 countries.
The agreement to limit warming below 2°C above pre-industrial levels & ideally 1.5°C; crossing this threshold will alter the main aim of the agreement. If we don't keep to this promise, we are putting our lives, livelihood, communities and humanity in danger. In Africa, climate change is no longer a threat but a reality so for every bit of the warming, the more climate catastrophes. The government at all levels needs to step up more ambition to meet up with our National Determined Contributions (NDC) which has a clear pathway towards emission reduction. More importantly to keep our promises of climate finance which countries from the global south need to transit effectively and to deal with the climate crisis. For the next decade in view, we need greater representation of women and youth.
Young people need to be involved as part of these processes and can play an active role in international climate cooperation because becoming leaders of tomorrow starts now. We need to be on the table in the decision making our our tomorrow.
