Many businesses start in a shed, and Amptech Services was no exception :) Year is 2011 - I moved to the current location a few months later after the neighbours got fed with the test tones and amp testing! #amptechservices #amptech #iow #electronicsworkshop #amprepair

Pair of Citronic powered speakers. Fault: buzz, getting hot, breaking up at low volume. Fault diagnosis showed that there were many failing capacitors in both units. All were changed for good quality components - a fiddly job and care needed to be taken to ensure all insulating washers were refitted correctly. Both speakers now work perfectly, and for budget units, actually sound very good. Job done! #amptech #amptechservices #citronic #repair #electronicrepair #isleofwight #iowfestival

Crown XSL602 amplifier: fault was RH channel inoperative. This was purchased by the customer with some speakers as ‘faulty’. On inspection, it was clear someone had attempted to repair it and had given up. There was solder floating around inside although no evidence of changed components. The first issue I found was a driver transistor that had failed, but when changed did not solve the problem (fault caused by previous attempted repair?). After more fault-finding, a resistor was found to be defective in the bias circuit of a long-tailed pair. As the amplifier is DC coupled by nature, this was upsetting the bias elsewhere and stopping the amp from working. After changing it, the channel burst into life and all was good, job done :) @crown @amplifiers @xsl602 @electronicsrepair @proaudio @amptechservices @amptech @iow @isleofwight

An Ashdown 300 EVOIII combo from Platform One Music College with some speaker issues. Having spoken to Ashdown, Dave Green suggested fitting Jenson (Sica) speakers with neodymium magnets as the originals were no longer available. I could only get 8 ohm ones so with them in parallel the impedance is now 4 ohms, making the amp louder but unable to be used with an extension cab, not an issue for this customer. It was very heavy originally, but now a good deal lighter which is useful. These speakers sound great too, and it is loud… #ashdown #ashdownamps #ashdownevo300 #iow #amptech #amptechservices

Peavey Keyboard combo: loud buzz. This amp was bought locally by the customer from Facebook Marketplace. It was faulty on power up and the vendor washed his hands of the problem saying that it was sold cheaply. I have seen this so many times, particularly with eBay purchases, often bought for top dollar. The reality is that people withhold or fail to disclose faults - ‘you got it cheap’ or ‘it was ok when I had it’ is no defence. This amp had clearly been faulty for some time, so once again an unfortunate situation to put it mildly. Anyway, all sorted and working perfectly - PSU capacitors resoldered and re-bonded, mains lead refitted and serviced. All good. And a pic of my cat, Honey, on the bird table :) #peavey #keyboard #combo #repair #power #supply #iow #amptech #amptechservices

Fender Hot Rod guitar combo: great bit of kit, but they certainly work the output valves. They would have failed a lot faster had I not changed the bias pot - intermittent wiper which could have caused red-plating of the valves. All done, together with a fix on the reverb circuit and 12AX7 change. Job done :) #fender #fenderhotroddeluxe #repair #amptech #amptechservices #iow

Cambridge Audio A1 hi-fi amplifier with a failed toroidal mains transformer. I found an equivalent transformer from a component distributor, +/- 28V DC supply required, so a calculation was needed to figure out the transformer voltage and power rating required. The first shot shows the transformer hooked in to test it - voltages spot on, very satisfying :) Then, it was fully installed and tested - job done :) #cambridgeaudio #cambridgeaudioa1 #hifi #repair #electronicrepair #amptechservices #amptech #iow

This a Peavey XR684 which I sold to the customer about eight years ago. It failed at the end of a gig - fault traced to defective cooling fan causing the thermal cut-out to kick in. Also changed a noisy op-amp in channel 8. All good :) #peavey #peaveyxr684 #xr684 #repair #proaudio #amptechservices #amptech #iow

Quad 33 pre-amplifier. So, the main job here was to change the bulb and check everything works. Easy? Nope. The screw-in 6V bulb refused to unscrew, so the holder had to be unclipped and unsoldered from the inside, not easy when there’s hardly any room and very short wiring. Some corrosion had jammed the old bulb in, and very fortunately I had the right bulb in stock - new old stock from a 1950/60s collection I inherited. Good job too - panic job going to a new owner. So ‘just a bulb change’ can be a bit of a performance, and there are some pieces of equipment much harder to do then this… Job done! #quad #quad33 #quadhifi #quad33preamp #hifi #iow #amptech #amptechservices #therepairshop

Crate guitar combo chassis. This one had had a bit of a trauma, but fortunately the electronics were all but untouched. Had to resort to a bit of panel beating, but as it’s aluminium, not too tricky. Powers up, just a few more bits to change and then job done :) #crategt212 #electronicsrepair #repair #proaudio #amptech #amptechservices #amptechnician #iow
