World premiere at the Royal Swedish Opera on October 18, 2024. Tickets on sale May 2.
In 1768, Couschi (later Gustav Badin) was baptized at the age of eighteen in the chapel of Queen Louisa’s impressive Baroque residence, Drottningholm, outside Stockholm. The extended royal family assisted at this celebration. His foster parents and siblings acted as his godparents, while his given name, Fredrik Adolf Ludvig Gustav Albrecht, reflects the regal names of past and present Swedish kings and princes.
Gustav Badin’s life story is an incredibly important part of Swedish history that deserves to be highlighted. He was a complex person, who was born into difficult circumstances but later became a prince in one of Europe’s most powerful families – a journey that can give us a new perspective, and hopefully inspire and strengthen our society today. To get the opportunity to create a ballet about Gustav Badin at the Royal Swedish Opera is of course very cool, especially considering that for several years, Badin danced together with the French troupe and Louis Gallodier, who created the Royal Swedish Ballet.
