As photographers we are constantly questioning / revisiting the photographic canon and experimenting with how we add to a history of flawed archives. As bookmakers, we are thoughtful and careful about what we choose to honor, print, and literally archive in the book form. ⏳The work of bookmaking is deeply rooted in archivist practices as for so many of us immigrant / refugee / adjacent experiences, the foto as memory is all we have. As educators, we bring the archive with us into every classroom and honor the artists before us, as well as invite students to begin the process of making and examining an archive for themselves. 🔥💜FUTURE FIRE is an extension of this archival work — it builds on work published in 2018, FEMME FRONTERA, about queering the borderlands across TX/MX/CA; and FIRST FRONTERAS, published in 2019, a collaborative approach taking a closer look at the nuances in the word ‘Frontera’ and how borders manifest in our lives in a myriad of ways. Finally, FUTURE FIRE builds on the work of icon, teacher, king — 🖤James Baldwin, and his book, THE FIRE NEXT TIME, 1968. 🎂 We intentionally made this in his honor this year, to commemorate Jimmy’s 100yr bday 🎈Happy birthday, King! #hhp4eva #communityovereverything #archiveweek #FutureFire
