Re-think the airport archetypical buidings : from a utilitarian shape to a poetic gesture, the three pavilions rise in the sky like birds flying across the Runway Park.
Sky Drift Runway Park transforms the historical site of the Nanjing Dajiaochang Airport into a vibrant urban space that integrates ecological principles, community engagement, & modular architecture. Drawing inspiration from airport archetypes & the flight patterns of birds, the design features a repetitive system of flexible units, creating distinct but cohesive architectural forms; this modular strategy allows for future expansion, ensuring longterm adaptability.
Each pavilion is carefully programmed & oriented to optimize relationships with the surrounding green spaces, buildings entrances, metro and circulation. The structures serve multiple purposes: spaces for community events, workshops, educational programs on ecology, café, sports base, belvédère for views over the park and grand stands facing the main retail plaza. Each site has a distinct identity, with functions tailored to different user groups while maintaining a global coherence in the park’s design.
A network of colored tracks, inspired by airport runways, invite people to move through the park using various transportation means, enhancing accessibility and movement.
The lightweight construction system is based on steel and modular units, allowing for flexible assembly, disassembly, and future reconfiguration.
The entire park is designed to be scalable, adaptable, and sustainable, creating a balanced blend of urban functionality, green infrastructure, and cultural heritage. The project aims to be a dynamic, inclusive space that grows with the city while preserving its historical essence.
