While not a wild bird, Silkie Chickens are a domestic breed of chickens. These fancy chickens are called silkie because of their plumage, which feels like silk. This breed is also known as the Chinese silk chicken because of its origins. What’s really interesting about these chickens is they have black skin and bones and have 5 toes (most chickens only have 4). Silkie chickens are well known and loved by people who raise chickens. This is because these chickens are extremely docile and are amazing brooders (tending to eggs). If you wanna learn more about the origins of domestic chickens, comment GUINEA FOWL! #birdfacts #bird #chicken #silkiechicken #guineafowl

Happy Valentine’s Day. Noted to be one of most intelligent birds in the world, the American Crow is a clever bird! They belong to the genus Corvus which has over 40 species spanning all over the world. In the US the American Crow and the Common Raven are often mistaken for each other. Thus, here are some key differences between them: 1. Ravens are much larger than crows (24in/61cm long vs 17in/43cm long). 2. Crow beaks are slimmer than raven’s. 3. Crows make a traditional caw call while Ravens have a deeper khaar call. 4. Crows have a rectangular shaped tail (or fan shaped when flying) and ravens have a V-shaped. 5. Ravens tend to soar (flap less) and are found in smaller groups or by themselves. Crows are generally seen in large groups and flap often. 6. Ravens have ruff feathers on their throats. Let me know what birds you want to hear about next! Also let me know if I should do voice overs instead. #birdfacts #bird #americancrow #crow #commonraven #raven #digitalart

One of the most famous birds in Kansas, the Northern Cardinal are the easiest to see for first time birders. The Northern Cardinal are within the genus Cardinalis which they share with two other species (Pyrrhuloxia and Vermilion Cardinal). Displaying a bright red, the male Northern Cardinal are notorious for being loud and during mating season they tend to fly into windows. Female Northern Cardinals are more of a light brown with red on their tails, wings, and crests. Additionally, this species is one of the few songbirds in North America where the females sing as well. Dark-eyed Juncos are flying around this male Northern Cardinal too. Comment what interesting fact(s) you learned about the Northern Cardinal! #northerncardinal #cardinal #bird #birdfacts #kansas

In honor of #birbfest2024 here are two Blue Jays seen during the Christmas Bird Count in Kansas. Blue Jays belong to the genus Cyanocitta. They share this genus with the Steller's Jay. This genus in within the Corvidae family (crows, magpies, jays). There are four subspecies: Northern, Coastal, Interior, Florida. They stay year-round in Kansas and most of eastern US. Blue Jays are known to be noisy and aggressive, but extremely easy to spot due to their bright blue feathers. They are even known to chase away hawks and owls! Let me know what Kansas birds you might be interested in next! #bluejays #kansas #birds

Happy National Bird Day! This is a Harris's sparrow (immature). Harris's sparrow is commonly seen in Kansas in the winter time. They are closely related to 4 other bird species in their genus, Zonotrichia (including White-crowned and White-throated sparrow [both winter in Kansas too]). They are also closely related to the genus Junco (including the Dark-eyed Junco known as the snow bird). You can hear the sparrows and Canada geese in the background. Also, comment if you'd like to learn more bird facts, I've thought about doing short videos on local bird species!
