Six Indigenous leaders from across the Amazon. Jewelers. Investigators. Government officials. Scientists studying mercury contamination. Over 50 people, from eight Amazon countries and across the gold value chain, all in the same room, working on the same problem: destructive gold mining in one of the world's most vital biomes. This was the Amazon Gold Alliance Summit in Lima, convened by Amazon Aid. It was the first time AGA has gathered in person. Deep gratitude to every person who showed up - and especially to the Indigenous leaders who carried the heart of this gathering. Onward.

It turns out there are over 1000 species of frogs in the Amazon just like this guy...and those are the ones we know about! Researchers are constantly finding new species, which is just one reason we focus on protecting the region. Photo © Dano Grayson, courtesy of Amazon Aid

From preventing corruption to protecting ecosystems, beneficial ownership transparency is a powerful tool for accountability. With insights from global experts and real-world examples, this session highlighted how data can drive better governance across the Amazon and beyond. Sometimes it can be hard to picture the scale in conversations revolving around environmental protection. Finding other ways to visualize the world-wide impact is crucial to demonstrating the importance, and the Guardian does a fantastic job with this interactive map resource. Whether you are looking at gold, biodiversity, or it’s other features, it makes it impossible to deny the scale.
