I had been waiting for the right time to post my Drag N Drive video, and then time just got away from me. I hesitated for a while due to the far-right tweets about me that surfaced at the end of summer. Those tweets targeted the fact that I am a drag performer and a teacher, the very thing my Drag N Drive video highlights.
This year, being a teacher has been impossible. To be honest, I am burnt out by teaching. Iโm sick of senseless education policies and high turnover rates that have us starting from scratch every year. (Donโt ask me how many principals Iโve had in the last two years.) But one of the things that keeps me returning to work every day is the fact that I am a queer educator. And I wish that when I was a kid, I had a non-binary teacher. I am out and proud at work to normalize queer individuals existing and being active in the education sphere.
This video means the world to me. The production quality and experience was beyond polished. I want to give the biggest thank you to the director,
@hoop_rebel , for building me up so much and working some serious magic with the camera crew
@griggsymedia and
@singletracklens to bring this vision to reality. Thank you to
@bellamurry for listening to me and working through all my impossible ideas. You were both endlessly encouraging before, during, and after filming.
Thank youโฆto everyone who assisted backstage and during the interview and
@midsouthpride . To
@fendilafemme , like always, for the sickening costume. And finally, to Miriam for playing my student and stepping into this room full of strangers and cameras with professionalism far above her age.
I could not have imagined a better video. This was an incomparable experience. Being out and proud at work is not easy. I face endless questions from adults doubting who I am and why I am that way. And every time I watch this video, I am reminded that although people who donโt know me will throw me down again and again, being a drag performer and a teacher is a source of strength.
