Do you know who the gentleman in my last reel is? Some professional relationships quietly grow into something far more meaningful—and our friendship with Mr. John Zubrzycki is one of those rare journeys. Back in 2018, I had the privilege of launching his remarkable book Jadoowallahs, Jugglers and Jinns (aka Empire of Enchantment). What began as a collaboration soon grew into a friendship rooted in shared curiosity and a deep appreciation for history, culture, and magic. In 2019, he surprised me on stage at the Apeejay Lit Fest by calling me up for a quick performance—an unforgettable moment. In 2020, I had the honour of conducting a session with him alongside Maneka and Mumtaz Sorcar at the Kolkata Literature Festival, followed by a memorable trip to Pandua with him and his partner April Fonti in search of traditional Indian street magicians. In 2025, Ankita and I were proud to be part of his Magic and Mysticism of West Bengal initiative—performing for Australian guests in Kolkata and guiding them through Pandua to experience these traditions firsthand. Over the years, what stands out most is not just John’s brilliance as an author, but his generosity, curiosity, and spirit of collaboration. From 2018 to 2026, it’s been an incredible journey—and we’re just getting started. Lots of plans ahead.
