Angela Jones grew up alongside starfish. She has fond memories of searching tide pools for sunflower stars, the largest species in the world. But now, they really are just memories. The sunflower star, once common on the West Coast of the U.S., is nearly extinct. The culprit? Sea star wasting disease. Sea stars are a little-understood but vital part of the ecosystem, but wasting disease is decimating them. A golden glow shimmers along the Charles River as a two person skull makes its way off the CRI docks. After a few test strokes, Megan Hopkins hits the catch with power she hasnāt been able to achieve with her previous prosthesis. A giant smile spreads across her face as she drives to the finish. āItās so good,ā Hopkins yells to the Northeastern students that are excitedly watching from shore and in the launch.Ā
Hopkins had some of the best rowing of her career that late November day, thanks to the ingenuity of Northeastern bioengineering students who developedĀ a prosthetic foot and ankle for the local para-athlete.
Watching this scene unfold through my lens, I forgot about my frozen hands. What a privilege to share this moment with Megan and the team of students who worked so hard.
