Alyssa again… Today’s meditations center around being “spineless” in “any moment like this” of great human suffering and exploitation—from Gaza to Sudan to Haiti to Congo and beyond. Spineless here does not just mean standing aside and letting others make brutal decisions. It also means aligning with power or money over the health and safety of human lives. And then choosing to make inhumane, unconscionable decisions. This is the policy of our government, of many governments and institutions worldwide. It’s an active, measured choice. And from Israel to the United States, leaders and media rely on rhetoric and propaganda to obscure the fact that their policy is death. And so we see those with power (“the nuclear bomb”) saying they are afraid of the powerless (“the cucumber”). If we believe we are “implicated in one another,” then it matters the institutions we involve ourselves with and seek positions of power in. Many have bought into the idea that they can change these institutions from the inside “incrementally.” And we’ve seen them become the mouthpiece for the spineless from the UN to Atlanta. I hope we imagine more. And in this lifetime of resistance, I hope we seek positions, avenues, and opportunities that allow our siblings to “gather,” “ripen,” and flourish.
