So often, locals hear things like: “Just work harder.” “Hawaiians are lazy.” “If you can’t afford Hawaiʻi, move.” But the reality is that people in Hawaiʻi do work hard. Teachers. Healthcare workers. Construction workers. Local families working multiple jobs just to survive. The issue isn’t laziness. It’s that Hawaiʻi has become so expensive that even the people keeping these islands running are struggling to stay here. Nearly half of Hawaiʻi teachers leave within 5 years. Healthcare positions across the state remain unfilled. Construction workers help build Hawaiʻi while many still cannot afford a home here themselves. Locals are not being priced out because they don’t work hard enough. They’re being priced out because wages are not keeping up with Hawaiʻi’s cost of living, outside investment continues driving up housing costs, and local families are being forced further and further out. Hawaiʻi should not become a place where only wealthy outsiders can afford to live comfortably.
