Extended!! Beneath the Earth and Above the Clouds has been extended until May 24th! Through three- and two-dimensional works, Osmo and Shalkar offer an anthropological perspective on Central Asian female identity across earthly, divine, and spiritual realms. While women of the region were shaped by culture and tradition—often seemingly bound by these roots—the artists also reveal how women have contested and transcended conventional roles. “Beneath the Earth and Above the Sky” opening night of a joint show with talented @aya_shalkar at @saparcontemporary curated by incredible @rachel.parikh . It was an absolute honour to work with these fantastic women! The show is until the 15th of May in Tribeca, come visit! Personally for me, it was a night of celebration of new creations in honour of female ancestors and mighty feminine power! Also, it was about letting go of what I held dear in my mind and close to my soul for so many many months. Often, creation of art is both gruelling and lonely process, but this body of work would not have been possible without the incredible support of my loving family and Anne and Gerard @gerard.tardy.3 , my amazing friends and creative team @jipariska , @kul_off , @aidai.ch , @alya_no_suketchi , @jyldyz_asanakunova_ , @sumsarbekobbo , @christinamacgillivray , @brantonsaurus , @sagynbekulanov , @bigbashka , @darikasym , @ramzzza.ph , @keriakii , my jewelry masters - Nurlan & Ermek baike, felters - Kunduz eje and Felt Art Studio, shyrdakchy - Venera, Asel, Akuvai eje and so many other artisans. My muse is my 93-year-old grandmother, Selkin Ene — the heart of our family. On her chest shine three silver hearts, a symbol of Mother’s boundless love for all her children. I dedicate KUT ЭNE KUSH to her and all women ancestors. Selkin Ene was born and grew up in the early 20th century. By the age of 18, she was already married to my grandfather Tentimish Ata, who was a poet and teacher. At that time he was a WWII veteran, and upon his return from war, found his first wife had ran off with someone else. So he married Selkin Apa, a tall and beautiful young lady then. She gave birth to 8 children, two of whom died in infancy, and oldest of the survived being my father Urmatbek. She became a master embroidery artisan, for which she was sent to Moscow, then the center of USSR. It was an equivalent to traveling to space she would later tell us reminiscing those days. Her life was full of hardships of raising 6 children in the mountainous village of Korgondu Bulak with a poet husband, who was known for being a soft man, a dreamer and not particularly practical. But also full of joy, being surrounded by her children and now 20 grandchildren and even more great-grandchildren. She has lost her husband and my grandfather almost 20 years ago, becoming the matriarch of the family. She knows and remembers everything what’s going on in the family, which always personally amazes me. She loves life and always gives us her blessings. And demands us to buy her the best vitamins and facial creams. ☺️ In Kyrgyz culture, there is a tradition of knowing the names of your seven forefathers “Жети Ата”. Since early childhood boys and girls are taught the names by their fathers, uncles and brothers. I would always question why we had to remember only the names of our male ancestors, and not female. Women are often overlooked, under appreciated, and forgotten. I believe that it is equally important to know and remember our women ancestors too. I will begin this tradition from my family. Altynai Osmo is a multimedia artist and activist from Kyrgyzstan, whose work is deeply rooted in Central Asian nomadic heritage. She integrates a diverse array of media to explore themes of cultural identity, tradition, and women's empowerment. Osmo's artistic endeavors aim to bridge traditional and contemporary societies, fostering dialogue and understanding.
