Emerald is the birthstone of May. Alphonse Mucha personified this verdant gem in his 1900 series, The Precious Stones, depicting Emerald as a mysterious and formidable woman rendered in various shades of green. The ornate armchair — its armrest crowned with a sculpted animal head — was inspired by a chair from Mucha’s own collection, which appears in several of his drawings and photographs. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #emerald

The profound affection Mucha held for his wife, Maruška, is unmistakable in every depiction he made of her. She was, in many ways, his ideal companion: well-educated and well-read, musically gifted, passionate about art, naturally beautiful, and from an old Czech family. In this intimate portrait, Maruška is captured in profile, seated gracefully in a chair. She wears an elaborate gown and holds two pink carnations delicately in her hands, surrounded by lush, flowering plants. Her expression is one of quiet serenity, her head inclined slightly forward in gentle repose. Throughout their marriage, Maruška remained Mucha’s greatest muse and the most steadfast supporter of his artistic vision. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #love

The fragrance of flowers and flora permeates the air as spring comes into bloom. 🌸 Scent served as the central motif of Mucha’s 1896 poster for Lance Parfum Rodo, a perfume produced by the Société des Usines Chimiques du Rhône in Lyon. His elegant, graceful depictions of turn-of-the-century women proved especially popular with female audiences, making his commercial work highly sought after by cosmetic companies. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #parfum

While Alphonse Mucha is predominantly recognized for his iconic depictions of flowers and feminine beauty, animals occasionally appear in his works as well. 🐾 In Documents Décoratifs, three distinct dog breeds are elegantly integrated with botanical elements and decorative mosaics; birds feature prominently in his 1896 rendition of The Seasons; and horses make a striking appearance in the Slav Epic. Have you noticed other animals in his works? #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #animals

Based on the symbolic elements Mucha chose to include, do you think this story has a happy ending — or a tragic one? Alphonse Mucha created this poster in 1911 for Oskar Nedbal’s ballet-pantomime, Princess Hyacinth, which premiered that same year at the National Theatre in Prague, with a libretto by Ladislav Novák. The narrative follows a village blacksmith who dreams that his daughter becomes the Princess Hyacinth, only to be abducted by a sorcerer. Mucha alludes to this storyline through a carefully selected array of symbolic motifs — including hearts, blacksmith’s tools, a crown, and instruments of sorcery — while the hyacinth flower recurs throughout the decorative details as a unifying visual theme. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #princesshyacinth

Mucha held a steadfast belief that beauty could be found even in the most ordinary of objects. These menu cards, created for a French champagne producer, exemplify what has come to be known as le style Mucha. Each card features an ethereal female figure draped in flowing garments, positioned along the left margin and depicted holding grapevines or an empty plate. The gowns are rendered in warm tones of yellow and red, set against a deep brown background. One can only imagine the impression such an exquisitely crafted menu would have made upon its recipients. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #lestylemucha

Spring held a special significance for Alphonse Mucha. During his later years in Prague, he created the allegorical masterpiece “Spring Awakens the Earth,” in which the figure of Spring — radiant in luminous green light — leans tenderly toward the Earth, still slumbering beneath a white mantle of snow, as if to rouse it with a gentle kiss. As we step into May, we hope to finally welcome lasting sunshine and warmth after the turbulent weather April has brought. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #spring

Last week, we introduced you to the first of Mucha’s two companion panels, Dawn and Dusk — also known as Aurore et Crépuscule. This week, we turn our attention to the second panel: Dusk (1899). Where Dawn was rendered in soft, delicate hues, Dusk comes alive in rich, vibrant shades of orange. Its figure, too, carries a different energy — the woman here lies on her opposite side, drawing a flowing garment around herself with quiet modesty. Her gaze is cast gently downward, lending her an air of graceful repose that feels more subdued than her counterpart in Dawn. On the horizon, the sun begins its slow descent, bathing the entire scene in a warm, golden embrace. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #dusk

“The purpose of my work was never to destroy, but always to create, to build bridges. Because we must live in the hope that humankind will draw together and that the better we understand each other the easier this will become.” May 1st marks International Workers’ Day — a public holiday in several countries around the world, including the Czech Republic. As many of us are fortunate to enjoy tomorrow as a day of rest, we take this opportunity to reflect on and honor those who came before us, whose dedication and perseverance helped shape a better, more united future for us all. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #workersday

Today, we turn our attention to another of Mucha’s works from 1897: Fruit. The figure in Fruit meets the viewer’s gaze directly, glancing confidently over her shoulder — a striking contrast to the subject of Flower (featured yesterday), whose eyes drift past the viewer toward some distant point. The woman is adorned with leaves woven through her hair and carries an abundant armful of seasonal fruit. Which fruit do you most look forward to in spring? #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #fruits

We have another final work and study comparison, this time focusing on the preparatory study for Alphonse Mucha’s 1897 artwork Flower. Unlike the finished lithograph, the final study was executed in pencil, ink, and watercolour on paper. Also dated to 1897, Mucha’s Fruit shares the same compositional framing and a closely related colour palette. #mucha #alphonsemucha #alfonsmucha #artnouveau #flower
