يبحث المعرض الفنّ بوصفه حيّزًا لذاكرةٍ حيّة، لا مجرّد سجلٍّ ساكنٍ للماضي. وهو يجمع بين نمطين متمايزين من "الانتشال": أحدهما ماديٌّ يتجسّد في نموذج النُّصب التذكاريّ ليوم الأرض (1977)، والآخر بصريّ تصوّريّ يتجلّى في "استحضار" عمل ناردين سروجي " 360" من عام 2024.
يتقاطع العملان عند فرضيّةٍ مشتركة؛ وهي أن الذّاكرة ليست إرثاً خاملاً، بل حضورٌ حيّ ومتجدّد وأنّ التّاريخ هو سيرورة متجدّدة تستمدّ معناها من تكرار استحضاره.

The exhibition examines art as a site of active memory rather than a passive record of the past. It bridges two distinct modes of “retrieval”: the physical salvage embodied in the Land Day Monument (1978), and the visual-conceptual “presencing” articulated in Nardeen Srouji’s “360” (2024).
The two works converge on a shared premise: that memory is not a passive inheritance, but a living and renewed presence, and that history is an ongoing process that draws its meaning from the repeated act of bringing it into presence.
Curators: Rula Khoury, Tal Ben Zvi - in collaboration with “Mossawa Center”.

Located at 25 Salameh Road in Jaffa, Al Mathaneh is a contemporary art gallery established by Al Saraya, the umbrella organization that also oversees Al Saraya Arab Theater Jaffa, Housed in a historic building that once operated as a wheat mill, which was built more than a hundred years ago. Al Mathaneh (Arabic for “The Mill”) has been transformed into a multidisciplinary space dedicated to showcasing and supporting contemporary Arab art.
“Al-Mathaneh” is located in the historic building of the old wheat mill in Jaffa, The gallery’s program encompasses a wide range of artistic disciplines, including sculpture, ceramics, sound and video installations, performance, and experimental practices. In addition to exhibitions, Al Mathaneh offers workshops, public discussions, guided tours, and live performances that foster dialogue and community engagement.The space also initiates cultural projects, and open cultural program for the public in Jaffa.
Al Mathaneh works alongside Al Saraya Arab Theater in Jaffa within a shared and comprehensive vision that aims to reaffirm Jaffa’s position as a vital center of Arab culture and to provide an institutional platform for Arab artists to create, exhibit, and connect.

في أجواء دافئة ومؤثّرة، نظّمنا مساء أمس جولة في معرض "ترويض الخشب: من الحرفة الى الفن" - في أوّل نشاط يُقام في جاليري المطحنة منذ عودة الحرب. اكتشفنا مع الفنّان إيليا قبطي كيف تحمل كلّ قطعة فنّيّة حكاية، وإيمانًا، وقيمًا إنسانيّة عميقة.
شكر كبير للفنّان إيليا قبطي على جولة صادقة من القلب، وللسيّدة ميري قبطي وجميع أفراد العائلة على مساهمتهم في التنظيم.

Like a candle in the darkness.
In a warm and moving atmosphere, we organized a guided tour last evening of the exhibition “Taming Wood: From Craft to Art” - the first event held at Al Mathaneh Gallery since the return of war. Together with artist Elia Copti, we discovered how each piece carries a story, a belief, and profound human values.
Thanks to artist Elia Copti for a heartfelt and genuine tour, and to Mrs. Miri Copti and the entire family for their contribution to organizing this event.
