Walked into @barnesandnoble to see my gingerbread house article in the December issue of @betterhomesandgardens and discovered that there was a reprint of my 2022 Kwanzaa cookies article on the shelves TOO!!! Such an incredibly proud moment that I’m so grateful for! Many thanks to the best editor ever, @jmiller310 , my talented creative assistants, Janae, Deb, and Riley, my awesome project collaborators, @ciancioreporter and @sugachef , and last but not least, @drimcheers and @niamcheers , for letting me write about their mom, who was so special to me too. ❤️ #therichelife . . . . . #betterhomesandgardens #BHG #BHGholidays #bhgstylemaker #blackwriter #blackwritersmatter #lifestyleblogger #mompreneur #mompreneurs #mompreneurlife #momblogger #momvlogger #contentcreator #inspiration #ladyboss #womeninbusiness #bossmom #momboss #girlboss #womenwhohustle #blackgirlmagic #blackexcellence #melaninmagic #womensupportingwomen

Two of my photographs made their debut last weekend at NYC’s oldest art club in my first juried exhibition and I’m still pinching myself! Captured while I was on a creative retreat in Italy last fall, “The Three Graces” and “Tuscan Daybreak” were selected for Il Chiostro’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition at the historic Salmagundi Club (9/5–9/12). ‎Out of hundreds of submissions worldwide, only 60 pieces were selected, and it was truly an honor to have my work included. Such a beautifully surreal moment that meant even more to me because my family was there to share it with me. ❤️ ‎And stay tuned…this is just the beginning. My full “10 Days in Tuscany” series is coming soon! 🙌🏾 . . #artexhibition #artshow #photoexhibit #photoexhibition #tuscanyphotos #salmagundiclub #ilchiostro #photographerlife #travelphotographer #blackexcellence #blackwomanphotographer #blackgirlmagic #blackwomanmagic #representationmatters

When @thereeljade asked me to be her doulagrapher (doula + photographer) for her third baby, I laughed because I knew there was no way she could be serious. Me? The person who gets nauseous at the sight of blood. Me? The person who never experienced labor, thanks to the trauma of an emergency C-section. No training. No experience. Seriously, why me? Because my daughter’s birth story had been about survival and my sister wanted me to have what I didn’t get to experience. I was afraid right up until her first contraction. But then something shifted. It was like a switch flipped, and I moved into protector mode. Because I knew the stats: Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes in this country. At 39, her risk was even higher. So for 48 hours, I leaned all the way in. I asked every question. I paid attention to every detail. I learned every nurse’s name. I was there for her. Fully. And when it was time for her to push, I felt it in my body too. Aiden Austin was brought into this world by a team of women of color, with a Black woman guiding his arrival. It wasn’t planned or expected, but very clearly divinely orchestrated. Look. At. God. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever witnessed. The best gift anyone has ever given me. And in that moment, my sister became the strongest woman I know. A year later, I was still behind the camera, celebrating Aiden’s first birthday at our favorite beach. But the truth is, far too many Black women in this country don’t get to that moment. This is why #BlackMaternalHealthWeek matters. It’s about making sure more of our stories are held with the kind of care, the kind of attention, the kind of protection, and the kind of life-affirming love that we all deserve. ❤️ #Blackmaternalhealth #blackmothers #birthstory #blackmotherhood

“Who do you want me to save…Riche or the baby?” That’s what my doctor asked my husband and mother as I was being prepped for an emergency C-section with Riley. It wasn’t until years later that they shared this with me. I had preeclampsia. I could’ve died. I had no idea. Black women in the US are 60% more likely to have preeclampsia than white women and nearly 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women—and most of those deaths are preventable. Behind every statistic is a moment like mine. A question no family should ever have to answer. While Cedric was still in shock, trying to process it all, my mother got really close, looked my doctor square in the eye and declared, “You will save BOTH of them.” Because that’s the kind of Black mother she is. The kind who speaks life firmly, clearly, without apology. The kind who refuses to accept impossible choices. By the grace of God, we both made it, but not every Black mother does. This is why #BlackMaternalHealthWeek is so important. It’s about making sure that Black women are heard, believed, and protected, so no family has to face that question alone. I am here because someone advocated for me when I couldn’t. Every Black woman deserves that too. #Blackmaternalhealth #blackmotherhood #preeclampsia #birthstory

Four days at @annapolisfilmfest , wearing my board member, filmmaker, and mom hats all at once. But the best part was Riley. Watching her watch me was a beautiful reminder of why I do what I do. From the film lineup to the people to the parties to the energy…you feel it the moment you arrive, it’s not hard to see why MovieMaker Magazine recently named AFF one of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World! 😎 Sending a huge thank you to everyone who came to see @goodhometrainingfilm during the no-empty-seats local shorts program. There’s nothing like a crowded room to make you feel proud of your work! 🙌🏾 My co-director @evolynbrooks couldn’t be there this time, but she sent her love and we felt every bit of it. And to the @annapolislinks , thank you for sponsoring our screening—we are still so grateful for your support. ❤️ #annapolisfilmfestival #blackgirlmagic #blackwomeninfilm #blackdirectors #mompreneurlife

Opening night at @annapolisfilmfest ! My first as a board member. My first as a filmmaker with a project in the festival. It was such a beautiful reminder that sometimes you’re building the table, and sometimes you’re bringing something to it. So grateful that I get to do both at this point in my career. If you’re in the DMV, I’d love to see you at the screening of my film, @goodhometrainingfilm , on Sunday, 3/29 at 2:30 pm at Maryland Hall during the local shorts program. Link to tix in bio. ❤️ #annapolisfilmfestival #blackfilmmakers #blackwomeninfilm #filmmakerlife #directher

Good home training looks like learning from an elder like Dr. Leni Sorensen, who invited us to film at her Indigo House Farm in Charlottesville, VA while she cooked, talked, and walked us through three centuries of African American women cooks. Grateful for that time. Grateful for the wisdom of our elders. Grateful for the powerful women around the table, who you’ll meet in @goodhometrainingfilm . And many, many thanks to the @annapolislinks for sponsoring next weekend’s screening at the @annapolisfilmfest so you can soak up some of Dr. Leni’s wisdom too. If you’re in the DMV, we’d love to see you there! Sunday, March 29th 2:30 PM Bowen Room at Maryland Hall Local Shorts block; Q&A to follow 🎟️ Link to tix in bio #AnnapolisFilmFestival #BlackWomenFilmmakers #DirectHer #BlackGirlMagic #BlackExcellence

We met in 2019 at a candle-making workshop at West Elm DC. @evolynbrooks was hosting, @allthingsriche was filming for The Riche Life, and we just clicked. Same energy. Similar outfits. We knew then that we needed to work together again. And now here we are, co-directing our first film, in honor of the women who gave us our good home training. 👸🏾 This photo was taken last month at the Directors Brunch hosted by the @directorsguild during @paffnow , and it felt like one of those “look at God” moments that we’d prayed for. So grateful for the journey, for the blessings of @goodhometrainingfilm , and for each other. ❤️ #directher #blackwomeninfilm #PAFF #blackgirlmagic #filmmakerlife

Many, many thanks to @paffnow for hosting @goodhometrainingfilm ’s West Coast premiere! ❤️ Being in the place I call my second home, surrounded by friends and family who have known me in every season of my life truly had me in my feelings. One little sister. Two blood cousins. Two play aunties. Two high school friends. Two college friends. And their friends. THANK YOU for showing up for me. My heart is so full. Good Home Training is a visual love letter that my co-director @evolynbrooks and I created to honor the women who raised us, shaped us, corrected us, prayed over us, and believed in us before we believed in ourselves. I hope they’re proud of what we’ve done. Brooklyn, NY, you’re up next.🙌🏾 #paffnow #blackfilmmakers #blackgirlmagic #blackexcellence #directher
