Will be screening a 16mm print of “Olivia’s Place” (Thom Andersen, 1966), a bigger influence on the project than any book. If you’ve followed All Night Menu for a long time, come to this. If you’re vaguely curious, come to this. If you’ve felt something for LA or in LA or of LA………. link in bio.

John Martin died a few weeks ago, on June 23, at his home in Santa Rosa. He was 94.
In 2024, I interviewed John for the All Night Menu Questionnaire, an interview series where I ask a cross-section of L.A. figures about their individual sense memories of place. As far as I know, this is the last interview John granted. It’s available to read at the link in the bio.
Even though he spent the last 50 years in Santa Rosa and Santa Barbara, John spent his first 45 years in L.A. The city gave birth to his literary interests and his remarkable press, Black Sparrow, which operated out of a back house in Cheviot Hills.
In the interview he talks about being a teenage outcast in 1940s Beverly Hills, and the long treks he took on the red car to excavate hot jazz 78s and rare books from houses in far-flung corners of the city. When asked for a song that evokes the Los Angeles of his youth, he told me Jelly Roll Morton’s “Dr. Jazz.” “The great man, the great man,” he said when I told him I was working on a story about Jelly Roll Morton’s time in Los Angeles.
He talks about his fondness for the Olympic Auditorium, and becoming friends with Art Aragon, the premiere prizefighter of 1950s Los Angeles.
He talks about witnessing a suicide attempt on the Colorado Street Bridge while canvassing for 78s with R. Crumb. “Did you plan that just for me?” deadpanned Crumb.
He talks about walking into a barbershop on Venice Blvd. around 1950 and meeting Brun Campbell, a ragtime pianist who had played with Scott Joplin at the turn of the century.
At the end of the interview, he describes the view from his window in Santa Rosa. “We have beautiful oaks that are very tall. The house is engulfed in leaves in the high season. We’ve been here 38 years. Here we will remain until our final adventure unfolds.”
